Ugh, that poor woman. She survived.
They moved her to another home.

Hard to believe the state of Illinois said everything was OK
at that nursing home even after they discovered the maggots in her ear!

"...after 57 maggots had to be removed from the woman's ear.

Family members and nurses discovered the maggots crawling out of the woman's ear ..."

This is so sad. Neglect to the max. :(

When I worked as an EMT for an ambulance company, we did a lot of transfers from nursing homes to hospitals, and vice versa. Some of these nursing homes were horrible beyond description.

In the 90's I worked as a Network Engineer.
One gig I worked had me travel for 9-months to almost
50 nursing homes across the country.

I saw a lot of terrible things,
maybe just 5 out of 50 I would consider housing my Mother.

Ironically the worst I saw was the first I went to, South Milwaukee.
The only time I actually saw a rat run across the hall from one room to another.

The smell and the total feeling of hopelessness just permeates 90% of the nursing homes. I do not know why they bother calling them nursing homes, as they are warehouses for the discarded and dying.
I was surprised to find children in nursing homes. One nursing home we transfered a teenager to, had 1 whole wing just for kids. That place was so sad, and the patient we transferred just totally broke my heart. He had just turned 19, and had graduated from high school a couple of months earlier. He had juvenile diabetes, and had gone blind in the previous year. He was not the least bit fat, he was of normal built. We had an excellant conversation, as this young man was extremely intelligent. He had no idea he was being warehoused. His diabetes was difficult to control, and of course he was blind because of his diabetes. His family didn't want to be bothered by him anymore, so they stuck him in the nursing home. This young man thought he was going to a rehab place, to learn to function better, since he now was totally blind. I will never forget the look on his face, when we wheeled him into his room, and he realized where he was at.
This was one of the most saddest moments of my life.

What is crazy is they charge so much money an insane amount. People put in these places should be living like kings not paupers. It is a racket! Keep the person at home and hire people to help you at least you have some control and you'll save money in the end.

That's very sad Tiger1.

My personal feelings about this relate to the initial effort to identify the 'nuclear' family as normal.
Perhaps I am impractical in my thoughts,
but I believe multi-generational homes/homesteads/lands are the way to go.
There is so much wisdom in older experienced humans,
it's a shame we discard it/them. :(

I don't understand how that even happens. Maggots only feed on decaying flesh. Unless she has some kind of nasty necrosis going on, this is just really bizarre.

Probably a bad infection, with necrosis. This tells you how bad her care must have been. If she had been bathed regularly, this infestation would never have happened, IMO.

I agree with you 100%. I think that families should try to "Clan Up", if possible, just like in the past. Not neccessarily in just one house, but in the same neighborhood, if at all possible. Not only does this help to maintain a strong family bond, but for safety reasons, having someone close by might be a lifesaver in time of trouble.
