The smell and the total feeling of hopelessness just permeates 90% of the nursing homes. I do not know why they bother calling them nursing homes, as they are warehouses for the discarded and dying. I was surprised to find children in nursing homes. One nursing home we transfered a teenager to, had 1 whole wing just for kids. That place was so sad, and the patient we transferred just totally broke my heart. He had just turned 19, and had graduated from high school a couple of months earlier. He had juvenile diabetes, and had gone blind in the previous year. He was not the least bit fat, he was of normal built. We had an excellant conversation, as this young man was extremely intelligent. He had no idea he was being warehoused. His diabetes was difficult to control, and of course he was blind because of his diabetes. His family didn't want to be bothered by him anymore, so they stuck him in the nursing home. This young man thought he was going to a rehab place, to learn to function better, since he now was totally blind. I will never forget the look on his face, when we wheeled him into his room, and he realized where he was at. This was one of the most saddest moments of my life.
Quoting: tiger1 That's very sad Tiger1. My personal feelings about this relate to the initial effort to identify the 'nuclear' family as normal. Perhaps I am impractical in my thoughts, but I believe multi-generational homes/homesteads/lands are the way to go. There is so much wisdom in older experienced humans, it's a shame we discard it/them. :( Quoting: wisc_natureboy I agree with you 100%. I think that families should try to "Clan Up", if possible, just like in the past. Not neccessarily in just one house, but in the same neighborhood, if at all possible. Not only does this help to maintain a strong family bond, but for safety reasons, having someone close by might be a lifesaver in time of trouble.
