Garbage Warrior - earthships self-sustaining off- grid contained homes
This is really a great way to build a house especially in Tornado Alley.

About Garbage Warrior

What do beer cans, car tires and water bottles have in common? Not much unless you're renegade architect Michael Reynolds, in which case they are tools of choice for producing thermal mass and energy-independent housing. For 30 years New Mexico-based Reynolds and his green disciples have devoted their time to advancing the art of "Earthship Biotecture" by building self-sufficient, off-the-grid communities where design and function converge in eco-harmony. However, these experimental structures that defy state standards create conflict between Reynolds and the authorities, who are backed by big business. Frustrated by antiquated legislation, Reynolds lobbies for the right to create a sustainable living test site. While politicians hum and ha, Mother Nature strikes, leaving communities devastated by tsunamis and hurricanes. Reynolds and his crew seize the opportunity to lend their pioneering skills to those who need it most. Shot over three years and in four countries, Garbage Warrior is a timely portrait of a determined visionary, a hero of the 21st century.

Pretty cool dude, remember seeing that Garbage Warrior thing a couple years back. Definitely some inspiration there, worth the watch for any off-griders.

Adding this to my favorites so don't lose it. Want to watch vids later.

It's very difficult to innovate these days. The last county to fall under FEMA building rules, with permit requirements, was Idaho County, back in the 1970s. Our homes are suffering.

We wanted to add a sloping glass small walk-in enclosure for plants onto the south side of our garage a few years back. Bought some used patio windows, large and uniform double pane glass, for a low price.

Found that we couldn't put them up without a permit which required an architect's plan properly submitted to authorities. Had 5 inspections because we put an electric wire into it. Waiting for these added weeks to the project. The cost ended up being more than 10X what we intended to pay, about $25,000.

Now we no longer consider changing a window, upgrading the porches, or making any other small improvement because the cost of permits is way more than we can handle.

You can see the results of this all over the country.

Thanks, OP, for offering a spot of hope.
