An extra $800 to get the 512GB SSD drive.

Boots up in 14 seconds compared to 30.

Read and writes a lot faster.

But does it last?

Does it heat up?

Any other info I should know?

cheers

I have an i5 with an SSD and it is the nicest machine I've ever owned. Boots up in 10 seconds or so, runs games & apps instantly, and shuts down fast.

I've had mine for a year and never had a drive check report any errors. Mine is an Apple branded SSD that came with the Macbook.

What I did was buy the base version then remove the super drive and add 512gb sad. That way you have 2 drives at half the price. I also bumped ram to 16gb. It runs fast and cool.

Yeah, I replaced the optical with a normal hard drive too - the SSD wasn't quite enough (128GB) - enough for programs but not for data.

I'm at 8gb of ram (doesn't support 16) and it runs it's fan when its working hard, but like now, just surfing and posting it's cool and silent.

Macs are great for getting stuff to work out of the box, but for the same price I could build a much more powerful gaming box that would serve me better and longer. I would primarily run linux on it.

Having said that, do any of you own a tablet? Are they worth getting?

If you're into audio editing, video editing, or photoshop. Macs are super duper machines. I wouldn't buy one otherwise...

All macs last a long time! I have an iMac, I can dual boot Windows 7.

I wouldn't spend the extra money personally, I don't need all the extras. I got the base model and still spent around $1,500 when it was all said and done.

Never had a issue with it.

30 seconds is still a fairly short bootup, i timed mine at like 19 seconds I think.
