Solar activity spikes and CMEs causing currents to be induced in power lines due to their long lengths. Overloaded transformers fry. There are some big ones to follow. Lead time to replace some of these big transformers can be long (try more than a year). Many transformers fried can bring down the grid.
Better look at hardening the system.... oh yes, they just looked.
This scenario was forseen a few years ago but the infrastructure was not updated to take care of the problem. You can expect possible widespread, long term power outages. Will be interesting.

Booms and shaking were reported over large area's of Texas last night. USGS did not record the event. Several counties were involved.

I live in the central Texas area and have experienced no problems, however I am on the Hamilton Electric Co-op grid and it seems the affected areas are hooked the Oncor grid.
I have notice an increase in Hamilton Electric trucks up and down the road by my house today so maybe they are out checking their stuff.

I think Texas has its own power grid. I recall they are not as in danger of failure as the rest of the country.

that article says they found the culprit, and that it is "sonic booms" from Lockheed Martin, which "said they were flying the jets over Southern Oklahoma Wednesday"

but read the comments, they sound out of GLP, lol

example comments:

- was outside in Overbrook. I have heard many sonic booms before. This was easily 10x louder and more powerful than ANY I have ever heard in the past. Was with several others who are ex-military who said no way it was runofthemill SBs. Shook the ground here something fierce. Also 10plus counties now reporting hearing these things all at the same time. Crazy

- It has been a while since I heard a sonic boom but never anything like that! I thought that would be reported as a record earthquake for Southern Oklahoma. Hope those aren't going to be a regular. Kinda scary?!

- My husband heard it in Dickson and said it was POWERFUL. The ground shook with such force they thaought it was an earthquake. Hard to think it was really a sonic boom.

I just looked at google news and these all seemed to start about 3 weeks ago. There have been pole fires in many different locations since the middle of Nov.
