fact: this happened while he was at NAZARE - central Portugal famous for big surf.

Cooper said he was at the ocean for 2 hours, with no sunglasses and this happened.

Makes NO sense. I surf almost daily for 3-4 hours at the time, more during the summer (now it's winter) and this is just an excuse for something else...
