Although I do think the Mayan end date is significant, this "galactic alignment" stuff is wildly misunderstood by most people.

Some say we are crossing the galactic plane and that this will cause great changes. We crossed the galactic plane roughly 3 million years ago and will not cross it again (in the other direction) for another 30 million years.

The only alignment is a visual one, from the point of view on Earth. The sun appears to be in front of the galactic center. More importantly it is the winter solstice sun. The distinction is important because every year, in every age, the sun appears to be at the galactic center at some point in the year. But ancient people drew our attention to this point in history (approximately 1980-2020) when for a few decades out of the entire precession cycle of 25,800 years, the sun is at the galactic center on the shortest day, the winter solstice.

There is no supernatural significance. I do not expect a gravitational boost or a pole shift in 2012. This alignment is just a marker in time, an ancient way to describe or mark this moment in their future, when they expect certain prophetic events to unfold for reasons we may not fully understand.

Now that I've discounted the significance of the alignment, I'll add that I do think the time frame from 2012-2019 is very significant, because much prophecy points to it. Bible prophecy in particular gives astronomical clues that the End Times end completely in December 2019.
