Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18239908 Any solar system program can tell ya that. What IS aligning is the earth..the sun..and the exact center of the galaxy. THATS whats going to be in a line..NOT the planets. Well, actually thats not quite right. From our perspective here on Earth it will apear that the Earth, Sun, and tha galactic center are ligning up. When in actuallity it only looks that way. Our solar system actually passed through the Galactic plain over six thousand years ago, and we have been traveling away form it ever since. Ok? Last Edited by NervousAndJerky on 12/07/2012 12:03 AM |

" No, the Earth and solar system will not pass through the galactic plane on December 21, 2012! Astronomers believe the Earth and solar system reside north of the plane of our Milky Way galaxy. It is not known with precision how far north we are of the galactic plane, but estimates place us at a few to several dozen light-years. What's more, the solar system is going northward of the galactic plane as we speak at the rate of 1.5 astronomical units per year. In about 15 million years, we're expected to be farthest north of the galactic plane, perhaps to reach a peak of 230 light-years. After that, we'll start to plunge southward toward the galactic plane. In short, we won't be crossing the galactic plane in 2012 or anytime soon! As the solar system revolves around the center of the Milky Way galaxy in a period of roughly 230 million years, it does bob up and down through the galactic plane in periods of roughly 35 million years. But none of this has any bearing on what is to happen on December 21, 2012." Please see. [link to www.idialstars.com] And I quote. "Earth won’t physically cross the plane of our Milky Way galaxy in 2012. But Earth does cross the galactic equator in 2012. That’s something we do every year – twice. " Please see. [link to earthsky.org] And I quote. "In order to address this claim, it is important to discuss what we know about celestial bodies reportedly involved. The Galactic Plane is a plane precisely defined by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 1959, containing the center of and most of the mass in the galaxy. The Solar System last crossed it 3 million years ago and won’t do so again for another 30 million years because we are moving away from the plane!" Please see. [link to www.sbnature.org] There is much more info available. But perhaps you would like to do you're own independent research. That's the best way ya know? Instead of listening to crackpots. Just syaing. Last Edited by NervousAndJerky on 12/07/2012 08:39 PM |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 22323395 United States 12/07/2012 08:46 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thanks for a good debunking. Here's a little more: beyond that fact that alignments like this happen all the time, the force that the galactic center exerts on Earth is ~0.00006x that of the Moon on Earth and ~0.00000037x that of the Sun, doesn’t it seem a little ridiculous to claim that the galactic center can change anything on Earth if the Sun and the Moon cause little-to-no effect on geologic events?
