With animals it's body language and tones. That's really all they pick up on.

I once had a dog who seemed to understand words. If I asked her where water was, she would jump up at the sink. But if I asked her where milk was, she would jump up at the fridge. She had lots of toys but if I told her to get her frog, she would specifically pick up the frog and bring it to me. She also watched television. When a dog came on the screen, she would react to it by barking or running over to the TV. I have had several dogs after her, and none of them seemed to be as smart.

You can train them to do it. Say "scruffy, dinner," as you're putting out the dog food. Eventualy he'll come running even if there's nothing but an empty bowl there.

Re: do animals understand what you say verbally
My 2 cats can understand words for sure, i tested this out extensively with them. They know the difference between "treats" (which they get a handful of treats) and "meats" (which they get a whole meal of canned food). I tested this by asking them if they wanted some meats first, then gave them their meals. While they were eating, I asked them if they wanted some "treats" and they just ignored me and kept eating. The next day, I asked them if they wanted treats first, and gave them treats. While they were eating, I asked them if they wanted "meats", in which they responded by meowing right away and running to the kitchen. They clearly know the difference between "treats" and "meats", and considering how similar the words sound, is pretty impressive.

Re: do animals understand what you say verbally
I think so, though probably depends on the animal. Our cat found out what it means when my mom says that "he needs his ass cleaned" after one time of her needing to clean it with a wipe. Gross I know but the only example I can think of. The second time she was about to clean it and mentioned that it needs to be cleaned, he ran and hid. Though one of our other cats is so dumb I dont even think she knows her name but some animals might be smarter than you think.

My grandmothers boston terrier - no way, no how.

My psychotic beagle - he does his obedience commands very well. He knows the word bike & walk & what they mean. I'm having to spell them out know so he won't go bonkers.

Our 1 year old husky - she's too smart for her own good. She knows her simple obedience commands, even if I spell out bike or walk, she knows what they mean & is scratching at the door to go. She can be sound asleep & mention taking her for a ride & she's at the door as quick as she can get up.

Our 2 guinea pigs - ask them if they are hungry & they will start singing & dancing around their food bowl.

Yes they can. They also think we are stupid because we don't understand them. They don't realise our ears are not up to hearing as well as they do, and therefore don't hear the difference in their vocals.

My German Shepard is a genius. He knows what we say. Follows all commands. When I holler DOOM he will drag everyone's bug out bag out of the spare bedroom.

He is attentive and smart. I love that dipshit, best dog ever.

I shooed at a cow, my intent obvious to me, for it to turn around and go back the way it came out of its predicament. Again I shooed and it tossed its head as if to say "what you talkin' bout Willis" So I said "turn around and go back out the way you came" and it immediately turned and did so.
Many other similar experiences with different creatures. What is a coincidence anyway, but a label we use to write of the non explainable at the current time :)

I was told, by a lady friend, that when an animal is on the road before your car to quickly tell it to move off the road in the shortest route available. Many times I have done this and found it works more often than not. Does not seem to work for lizards, snakes and toads ...reptiles. /shrug

Re: do animals understand what you say verbally
Come over to my place any time and ask 'Do you want to go for a ride?'... see if you can remain standing as the two dogs will go crazy wanted to get in your car and go for a ride.

Dogs, raised with humans, have a vocabulary in the hundreds of words and yes they can put together simple sentence structure in their mind and know the difference between 'We went for a ride' and 'do you want to go for a ride?'.

Cats also can learn human language, they just choose to ignore ya. Well most cats, there are some that are very friendly and will come, fetch and do all sorts of tricks by verbal command.

Nearly all of the mammals that can live with humans can learn human language, more than just a couple of words or tones, but simple sentence structures.

Re: do animals understand what you say verbally
Depends on the animal like humans some are smarter than others. I have a cat we call it Dum Dum because it is pretty dumb, a rock is probably smarter. Hardly recognizes her own name.

Years ago I had a cat that was intelligent enough to try and carry on conversations with you and would have varied tones and lengths of meows in response to what you were talking to him about. The same cat would also sit alongside his food dish, scoop the food out with his paw and eat it off his paw. He'd also sneak into the bedroom when he wasn't supposed to be in there, even if I had only left for a second, lie down, and then when I turned on the light to remove him he'd act as though he'd been asleep for a long time and I was disturbing him and give me the "what" meow (there were meows fairly disctinct enough that they appeard to mean "what" "food" "treats" "hi" "leave me alone" "now" amongst others).

To say a cat can't be trained is a misnomer as well. I trained one of mine to give high fives on command.

Re: do animals understand what you say verbally
Talking is like spellcasting.

Spell -> Spelling.
casting -> Merging one or more material to together to create something new.

what can we merge with spelling letters?
we make words and with those words we make phrases.

Add intent and you can make those phrases move mountains!
How? with the emotions it Veheiculate.

When writing words, keep in mind that all comes from noise, thus words are made based on Phonetics!!!

spellcasting = The ability to voice your intents, will, desires and thoughts thru the making of complex noises that are known as words and phrases.

Now just imagine How powerful a Song is? It is a Ritual spellcasting. simply because the song is scripted!

With that in mind, there is no need to use specific symbols you barely understand when Spell casting.

Use the symbols you know and understand. The symbols everybody uses here. From A to Z and 0 to 9.

So to finish this... Yes animals understand you, ONLY if you wish to be understood! Remember that you are voicing that intent and animals are catching on that intent, not the words per say.
To live is to believe in the power of dreams! To dream is to believe in the power of love! To love is to Know the truth!
The Desire to Be fuel the belief that you Are which ignite the Will to Become which bring back forth the desire to be...
Let it be-come you! It means Stop seeking your higher self! It is seeking you! Stand still in your mind to calm the waters of your mind and then it shall find you, so you can ride those waves together!
your true self lies somewhere between your heart and your consciousness. It is called the heart consciousness, which is the creator, which is you!
The heart create the emotions and our mind evoke its purpose, from which we dream the life we live in order to imagine the nature of reality and finally remember love!

The highest Purpose of our mind is the ability to Forget! Go on and Forgive yourself!
There is no love in truth but there is truth in love!
Be authentic, nobody else can do it for you!
