depends where you're flying from, but there are scores of choices, especially if you are transitioning via HK. Guilin, Kunming, Harbin and Chongqing are a start: far more interesting than Shanghai (which is just a huge, flat megatropolis where you will be treated as a the stereotypical tourist and gouged where possible) and far more cheaper, plus much better natural scenery.
