Genetically modified mosquitoes to be released in Florida BUT, HOW does the 'modification affect OTHER physiological features of the insects makeup ? WILL it, say, now be able to carry the AIDS virus ( hasn't it always ? ) and pass it on to others through it's sting/blood drawing activities ? Wrote letter to New York Times editor of science section asking the above question about aids and mosquitoes. Replied that mosquitoes can't carry virus. WROTE BACK, ASKING IF THEY CARRY THE SLEEPING SICKNESS VIRUS IN AFRIC, why not the AIDS virus ? NO ANSWER ! Eagle |

Genetically modified mosquitoes to be released in Florida Thx to everyone who recommend a pin, and thanks mods for heeding their advice! This story scares the crap out of me. Genetics is, by definition, the practice of dynamic changes to life on Earth. And usually, those changes (when instigated by nature) are either benign, or instantly fatal to the organism that experiences any genetic change. Sometimes, they are very bad news for some other organism in the bioshphere, for example in the case of a predator trait which is so beneficial that it results in the extinction of some prey species. When these sorts of changes are instituted by man, the term "unintended consequences" literally becomes an existential threat to every species on the planet, including man. Genetically modified mosquitoes to be released in Florida I didn't read the article yet but what happens when the cities go around spraying to combat the mosquitoe population? Won't that be counterproductive or do these GM mosquitoes not die when sprayed? Man, can we fuck around with nature anymore ya think? We need an asteroid to stop this out-of-control tampering of the planet. And THIS....is only what they're sharing with us. Can you imagine what's being kept from us? |

Genetically modified mosquitoes to be released in Florida Oxitec Mosquitoes Have Been Released Before "The Florida release of the mosquitoes would not be the first for Oxitec. The company has released the mosquitoes previously. In the fall of 2009 they did the open air release of the engineered mosquitoes in the Cayman Islands, and followed up with a larger study the next summer. The company was criticized for pursuing the studies under somewhat of a "hushed" process but Oxitec emphasized that the releases were done in conjunction with Mosquito Research and Control Unit (MRCU) of the Cayman Islands and claim that the lack of newsworthiness is the only reason few outside the Cayman Islands knew of it. The company reported an 80% reduction in the Aedes aegypti mosquito population in the 16-hectare test site where the mosquitoes were released. The same mosquitoes were also released in Brazil in Feb 2011 and Malaysia in Jan 2011. In contrast to the relatively little notoriety of the Cayman release, the proposed release in Florida Keys is generating quite a commotion. An online petition started in March has gathered over 100,000 signatures, and the growing concern of the residents was covered in the latest issue of Nature. For a more background on the Florida situation, take a look at the detailed article in the Miami New Times News." con't... [link to biotech.about.com] |

Gators start showing up in drones eating kids and small pets fuck up the whole ecosystem. Who's great idea is that ? |

Genetically modified mosquitoes to be released in Florida The state's agriculture department oversees the mosquito control district, and Doyle said he would not expect any challenge from the state if the FDA signed off on the trial. The mosquito control district wouldn't need any local permit for the trial, either, but officials held a public meeting earlier this year and have posted information on the agency's website. Still, it could take years for the FDA to approve the trial. There hasn't been a case of dengue fever in Key West since November 2010, but two other cases were reported elsewhere in South Florida this fall. The mosquito trial proposed for Key West wouldn't be the first release of genetically modified insects in the U.S. HUNGER GAMES |

Genetically modified mosquitoes to be released in Florida How will the bird population be effected? Four things necessary for our survival!!! Biodiversity Interdependence between species The Law of FINITE Resources Don't crap where you eat... They're poisoning all the rats where I live, on the edge of the desert and killing the peccaries (wild pigs that are actually members of the rodent family) because they're a nuisance (by drama and tall tale only) to the people in the "planned" community here.. The prey birds, mainly owls and hawks, are eating the poisoned rats and dying! The same with the coyotes, which did a great job of keeping the rodent population under control. Those birds or prey also eat scorpions. I spent the day in the hospital from being stung by a Bark Scorpion last week. The only potentially deadly scorpion in the US. I've been stung before by other scorpions, no problem. This was on the back of my neck (Barks are the only ones to climb, hence the name). I blacked out about 15 minutes later. Now the small dogs that were being left unattended in backyards and attacked by the coyotes and peccaries are being stung by the scorpions and dying. People are finding the Bark scorpions in their bathtubs and kitchens. AND AZ discontinued the use of the anti-venom in 2004. Nature always seeks a balance. Leave it alone. It always wins in the end. |
