It must be terrifying for them when they try to cross a road in order to find food, this makes me very sad. |

Quoting: Seer777 That's a very warm sentiment and one that I share too however, animals have to eat. I don't think there's a strong bond in the rodent world. I may be mistaking. And if so, I'll learn something new but my instincts tell me that the one squirrel was moving the other closer (and out of danger) for selfish reasons not selfless kindness. |

Feel better and bless you for having a tender heart. God will see the OP's empathy, and folks, remember this great line from Star Trek 4- " I don't know about you, but my compassion for someone is not limited to my estimate of their intelligence." I feed the birds and squirrels in my yard. One day I saw a squirrel low crawling on her belly, obviously injured. She couldn't get up on her hind legs to open a peanut, so everyday I saw her, I would shell the peanuts, and she would allow me to come closer, or she would low crawl towards me. I saw her getting stronger each time she came to eat, and one day, she got up on all fours and ran away. Her recovery took about a month. What a good feeling to see her well again. After that, she came to me everytime I called her. Now I have about four who come to the door to get the nuts I give them. One has no use of a front paw, but she does well. The females are more trusting than the males, but there is one male who comes to the door. That's a nice story, you are a good person :) |

Quoting: Seer777 :) Just wanted to share... Quoting: Seer777 Elephants Hold Apparent Vigil To Mourn Their Human Friend "Lawrence Anthony was a conservationist and author known as "The Elephant Whisperer" who passed away on March 2nd. In 1999, Anthony rescued and rehabilitated a group of wild South African elephants who were deemed dangerous. And the animals appear to remember what he did for them: when Anthony passed away, a group of elephants visited his house in the South African KwaZulu for a two-day vigil, according to his family. Anthony, who grew up in rural Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi, was known for his unique ability to communicate with and calm traumatized elephants. In his book 'The Elephant Whisperer: My Life with the Herd in the African Wild', he tells the story of saving the elephant herds, at the request of an animal welfare organization. Anthony concluded that the only way he could save these elephants, who were categorized as violent and unruly, was to live with them - "To save their lives, I would stay with them, feed them, talk to them. But, most importantly, be with them day and night". When Anthony died of a heart attack, the elephants, who were grazing miles away in different parts of the park, travelled over 12 hours to reach his house. According to his son Jason, both herds arrived shortly after Anthony's death. They hadn't visited the compound where Anthony lived for a year and a half, but Jason says "in coming up there on that day of all days, we certainly believe that they had sensed it". Quoting: Atossa 18850150 True story: I have huge pecan trees in my yard, so naturally I have plenty of squirrels. One day a momma squirrel was chasing her babies up and down a tree next to my patio. She would catch a baby and take it back up the tree to her nest... but then another baby would make a run for it and she would chase that one down too. This went on for a few minutes, then a baby fell from the tree on to the patio. I could see it laying there breathing. Then the breathing stopped. Slowly the momma squirrel came closer to the dead baby... then she carried it away towards the alley. Then she did something remarkable.... she came back to the exact spot on the patio where her baby had died and she laid on her stomach with all her limbs spread out. She laid there in that pose for several minutes like she was mourning her baby. . Awe.. Animals are so pure of heart. I'm not surprised they grieve the loss of one of their own. Definitely pulls on the heart strings that is for sure. Last Edited by my2centsworth on 12/07/2012 04:27 PM |

A movement caught my eye, and I noticed a squirrel had just been struck by a car, and was flopping in its death throes in the roadway. At that moment, a crow swooped down, and took a bite out of the still thrashing squirrel. Nature: not kind, but interesting. |
