God will see the OP's empathy, and folks, remember this great line from Star Trek 4- " I don't know about you, but my compassion for someone is not limited to my estimate of their intelligence."
 Quoting: Mwalk

I feed the birds and squirrels in my yard. One day I saw a squirrel low crawling on her belly, obviously injured. She couldn't get up on her hind legs to open a peanut, so everyday I saw her, I would shell the peanuts, and she would allow me to come closer, or she would low crawl towards me.

I saw her getting stronger each time she came to eat, and one day, she got up on all fours and ran away. Her recovery took about a month. What a good feeling to see her well again. After that, she came to me everytime I called her. Now I have about four who come to the door to get the nuts I give them. One has no use of a front paw, but she does well. The females are more trusting than the males, but there is one male who comes to the door.
 Quoting: nutmeg

I have some that I made friends with last year, a pregnant female who used to come to my windowsill and stretch out in the sun listening to Bach, eventually she brought her babies to meet me, now they come by a couple times a day for peanuts, along with the blue jay parents/babies.

Very cool animals if you get to know them.
 Quoting: !saac

Remember, befriending wild animals might not be good idea few generations later, It will raise the babies dependant on humans and lose their natural fear of us. Theres lots of punk kids that like to kill animals for fun...

Nature made them cautious and self sufficient for a purpose, cause our world is a dangerous place.
 Quoting: APOLLO ILLUMINIST

I understand what you mean. There are days when they don't come by, and I assume they are finding their own food, so I feel that it's okay. There are many trees around my area.

I read that because of the mild winters we have been having in the northeast, the squirrel population isn't dying as usual during the winter. I haven't noticed an increase in squirrels in our neighborhood, though.

I did notice that my five big Southern Magnolias do not have many blooms on them anymore, and I see squirrels eating the seeds! No problem...but argh....I loved the fragrant flowers.

...and whose fault is it that useless eaters continue to breed more useless eaters? At least animals will not breed during lean seasons, and most have seasons within their biological clock that they breed in. Humans on the other hand screw 24-7 no matter if they can feed themselves or not, much less another mouth. Sad but true. The ecosystem functioned millions of years before we arrived and will continue to function LONG after we are gone...

Re: I just saw a squirrel trying to pull a freshly ran over, dead squirrel off the road with its hands.. made me sad

True story:

I have huge pecan trees in my yard, so naturally I have plenty of squirrels.

One day a momma squirrel was chasing her babies up and down
a tree next to my patio. She would catch a baby and take it
back up the tree to her nest... but then another baby would
make a run for it and she would chase that one down too.

This went on for a few minutes, then a baby fell from the
tree on to the patio. I could see it laying there breathing.
Then the breathing stopped.

Slowly the momma squirrel came closer to the dead baby...
then she carried it away towards the alley. Then she did
something remarkable.... she came back to the exact spot
on the patio where her baby had died and she laid on her
stomach with all her limbs spread out. She laid there in
that pose for several minutes like she was mourning her baby.

.

aww thats so sad :-(

I had a momma squirrel who lived in my roof above my apartment and one day I watched her take her babies one by one to the other side of the balcony, she would balance her self on the railing and carry them in her mouth and come back for each one, it was amazing to see her working so hard and she would sit on my balcony and dig thru my plants for food, i never bothered her though she was feeding her babies, i would put food out for her and her little family.

yes the child is starving needlessly we cannot pin this on to one person being at fault but the child should not have to strave. Half of the world is morbidly obese the other half barely alive where is the equality in that sense?

My kids and I witnessed two younger squirrels mourning a dead one on our back road only two weeks ago. It was sad and we were all devastated by the sorrowful sight. I picked the little thing up and put her in the grass and leaves by a tree off the road. My kids picked flowers and clover to put with her. They do have feelings. Dogs have so much dedication it blows my mind how much unconditional love they give.

Life is NOT fair, nor just. However, people should make intelligent decisions based on what facts they have at hand. Fact one for this poor child is that their parents should have thought twice before humping each other (an act that takes TWO) when sex is usually for procreation or pleasure - if pleasure use protection. So the outcome was procreation. Now, if they live in a shitty environment where they as adults are barely making it, how in gods name could they engage in sex with the high probability that a child would be born??????????? Like I said its sad, I am not excusing the situation. No one should suffer, not even animals. Yet as an advanced species people should not bring in children if they cannot feed them or take care of them. This even applies to western cultures that breed kids that the "state" takes care of...

Yeah, I came across a disturbing scene too.
I saw a guy on a country road nealt over the body of a rabbit, he was giving it the kiss of life.
I said leave it mate, it's a gonner.
He turned and looked at me,blood on his face, and he said 'enam yam yam'

The scientific community that has covered up many facts, that don't agree with their current thinking?

The scientific community who just 50 years ago lobotomized people for being dyslexic?

The scientific community that has gone along with the government, in hiding the benefits of marijuana?

The scientific community that hides the current effects on people caused by nuclear fallout, from government nuclear tests done in the 1940’s and 1950’s and 1960’s?

The scientists that say cures for cancer are bogus, when they actually work? Just so Big Pharma can make money.

Those scientist?

Please tell me you don’t still believe what our “scientists” ascribe to today.
I thought you were so much smarter than that.
