Start a thread asking: if you had a choice to save a human or a dog that was drowning, and you can only pick one, which would you choose?

You'll see more people will choose the dog.

Better put the age of the human being in that question. Even a child can have enough strength to drown someone trying to save them; an adult will most certainly drown the person trying to save them, if the "savior" doesn't know what they are doing.
The Dog is much easier to handle in this situation, and less apt to drown its savior.

Having said that, I don’t think there are many people who would stand by and not try to save either one if they were in trouble and drowning.

I think we would act on instinct and jump in to save the drowning person first, and then the dog… that is if we don’t think about the fact that the person will try to drown us, because they too are acting instinctively.. they need air.. and will push you under the water trying to get to that air.

Mmm BRIEF… does that make us animals? Acting on instinct. … we are walking a pretty fine line here.

Doesn't matter, morally you at least try to save the human before even considering the dog...

Stop anthropomorphizing. I use to shoot squirrels and leave them on the railroad tracks. I would wait for other squirrels to come pull them off the tracks. It was not to save them, they were eating the dead bodies I left behind.

 Quoting: BRIEF

What is sad is that some humans live like animals, and like you, my heart breaks for many people in that situation. What makes me so angry is that after the last big earthquake in Haiti, I read that the millions of dollars raised went to the government leaders and very little to the peoople. That's just awful!

I really believe that people who love animals....even lowly squirrels... also have much compassion for humans.

Animals do mourn. End of. I had 2 rabbits as a kid that were sisters and best friends for life even if i let them out to run around they didnt leave each others side. When one died of old age the other stopped eating completely. She had to be put down cause she wouldnt eat i put that down to the fact that she was upset that she lost her best friend and it didnt help that i had a holiday booked a few days after the first died and i cameback to the news that the second had stopped eating and had been put down it was heartbreaking for me. too_sad

Elephants Hold Apparent Vigil To Mourn Their Human Friend

"Lawrence Anthony was a conservationist and author known as "The Elephant Whisperer" who passed away on March 2nd.

In 1999, Anthony rescued and rehabilitated a group of wild South African elephants who were deemed dangerous. And the animals appear to remember what he did for them: when Anthony passed away, a group of elephants visited his house in the South African KwaZulu for a two-day vigil, according to his family.

Anthony, who grew up in rural Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi, was known for his unique ability to communicate with and calm traumatized elephants. In his book 'The Elephant Whisperer: My Life with the Herd in the African Wild', he tells the story of saving the elephant herds, at the request of an animal welfare organization.

Anthony concluded that the only way he could save these elephants, who were categorized as violent and unruly, was to live with them - "To save their lives, I would stay with them, feed them, talk to them. But, most importantly, be with them day and night".

When Anthony died of a heart attack, the elephants, who were grazing miles away in different parts of the park, travelled over 12 hours to reach his house. According to his son Jason, both herds arrived shortly after Anthony's death. They hadn't visited the compound where Anthony lived for a year and a half, but Jason says

"in coming up there on that day of all days, we certainly believe that they had sensed it"
