North Island woken by earthquake

Two quakes have rattled the North Island this morning.

The first magnitude 5.8 quake struck 25 kilometres south east of Tokoroa at 7.16am, GeoNet reported.

It was felt as far north as Auckland and widely throughout the central North Island and in Wellington. It was also felt in Marlborough, at the top of the South Island.

felt it in Christchurch too!
mind you, it was 175km deep.

usually USGS reports New Zealand earthquakes smaller than NZ governments own geonet magnitude.


judging my the area that people felt it, I think the American assessment of 6.3 is closer to the truth.

A 6.3 magnitude #earthquake struck 20 miles SW of Rotorua, New Zealand.

very deep. 197 kilometers.

deep inside the super volcano magma chamber.


this is the area that produced a VEI7 or VEI8 eruption about 1800 years ago that turned the sky red in Rome and China and caused a mini ice age.

I'm asking again, this is normal, many 6.0+ around the globe in too short time intervals?

Geonet just said it was felt all over the North Island and as far south as Christchurch but it was not felt at the epicentre. These deep quakes are strange. The last big quake, which felt pretty scary to me, was centred miles away and very deep, no one felt it above the actual epicentre then either.

A huge 8+ deep quake could take out infrastructure to most of the North Island!

Dang!! Mama is getting REAL active! The Big One in California CAN'T be too far off!

JUST BEFORE the big Jap quake.

there was also a mag 7 quake off japan JUST BEFORE that huge Jap quake too
