Strong earthquake felt across the country

An earthquake has struck deep underneath the central North Island.

GNS Science says the quake had a magnitude of 5.8 and was focussed 25km south-east of Tokoroa, 196km underground.

The quake was widely felt throughout the North Island. It has been described as "A long noisy quake which left lights swinging." Others have described it fading away and then coming back, with a side to side movement.

ONE News deputy political editor Jessica Mutch tweeted: "fairly decent quake felt in Wellington this morning."

Shit, that means the whole of NZ felt it. I used to think that big quakes were no biggie. No damage expected etc. and obviously had they been shallow we would be in trouble re damage but these last two deep quakes felt pretty big to me! (that 7.0 near Hawera a few months ago and this one) I wonder how big the mags can go with quakes that deep? Does anyone know?

i think you're right. if it happens though, we die SLOW deaths, from starvation and cold, so being on top of it is probably for the best

We need to know if it always happens, because we all probably are monitoring together because doom bs.
But if this continues growing, will be at least strange...

Its a pretty big island mate (approx 1000 kms long)with about 4 million people on it. Absolutely not feasible to get everyone of it. In any case earthquakes are not the really big danger in New Zealand its all the bloddy volcanoes. 64 so called extinct volcanoes in Auckland alone. Now if one of them blows its top then we have problems.

Sharp jolt of shorter duration. Rattled the windows and shook the bed. Felt quite strongly here in Gisborne.

I wouldn't say that, the gasses from a volcanic eruption could suffocate within minutes.

Also, their major city their, Auckland, has over 4,300 buildings that would FALL in a moderate quake.

That would be a few hundred thousand crushed quickly.

Many big earthquakes happen during winter solstice. It has to do with gravitational stress as the earth moves towards and away from aphelion.

if Taupo blows full force, the whole island will be enveloped in pyroclastic flows, then the gases and ash will starve us all

where would you rather be? Watching your doom approach, in a magnificent, loud, black roaring tumbling cloud, to instantly cook you, or a couple of months later, shivering, watching your family die painful deaths from cold and hunger?
