6.0 Earthquake - New Zealand - Taupo Volcanic Zone

LOL at the GLOOM. We get them all the time. I live close to the zone. Can see 5 volcanos from where I live..White Is being one... constantly steaming. Don't lose any sleep. The cities of Taupo and Rotorua are built right in caleras.

I was talking to a girl from ChCh once ( years ago) and she said she couldn't live in the North Is with all the Volcanos and earthquakes. I said.. you live on an Island split by the alpine fault! Essentially the plate boundary runs down the island. She didn't even know. ChCh was NOT known for earthquakes... she had probably never felt one....

Over a quarter of your population lives in Auckland, a city where 4,300 buildings are at risk of collapse, and your government won't even let you know which ones.

I’m curious to hear Bruce’s take on the NZ 6.3 quake.

I did a quick overlay of the current quake with Bruce’s older image of the 10 year history of TVZ quakes (I believe it was only shallow quakes however). The location of the new quake is annotated by a large orange dot.

I’m not one to make sense of this or try to interpret it. I could add some very light and non-scientific speculation if there were data on deep quakes, but I’m not sure how to get that information on the NZ Geonet.

When we have the large deep quakes there are not normally many, if any aftershocks...

so far there have been 15 in the area...all deep...

Yes; ironically the joke might be on the Australian PM. There is definitely reason to suspect a pattern of quakes, die-offs, and electromagnetic anomalies leading up to the Spring Equinox. But look for a game changing event before same.

This quake woke me up this morning. She was a real roll-a-coster of a ride. Went on for a long time then the 2nd, smaller one hit. Judged it to be a 5 at least. Been through worse though...bring on the doom!
