Well id like to hear from you guys. Seems like the majority of comments are in strong favour of vaccination, even some calling for compulsory vaccination of ALL CHILDREN regardless of whether the parent in question objects.

-----------------

The "vaccine objectors" are riding on the backs of the truly conscientious parents who immunise their children, writes Robin Barker.

Recent research shows that one in 12 Australian babies is not fully immunised. This figure is troubling due to the risk of diseases like measles, diphtheria and whooping cough re-emerging. "Vaccine objectors" are putting the whole community at risk.

Historically, there have been two main groups of parents not immunising their babies. One is the ignorant or disadvantaged group whose babies may not be fully immunised because the parents don't know where to go, don't know when to go, feel they can't afford it, maybe come from closed communities where English is the second, or third, language. Targeting these families is relatively easy and there are ways to encourage and help them to fully immunise their babies.

The other group is the rapidly increasing flat-earthers, the anti-immunisation activists who not only refuse to immunise their babies, but are on a journey to persuade all parents to do the same. In the past they were a relatively small but vocal group who received more media attention than their numbers warranted. Now it appears that their numbers are increasing and include well-educated, often professional, middle class parents.

It is extraordinary that the overwhelming benefits of childhood immunisation are being undermined by this growing noisy group, revelling in their "conscientious objector" status. It doesn't help when the mainstream media lets them present their case as a reasonable option for parents to consider.

Having had contact with many of these "martyrs" when I was a midwife and child and family health nurse, I was always struck by their smug rejection of immunisation; a procedure they inevitably revealed an appalling ignorance of. There was a lot of silly talk about the debilitating childhood diseases of the past being prevented by clean drains, efficient sewerage plants, sunshine, vegan diets, probiotics, homeopathic raindrops, dairy-free diets, organic lettuce and so on. Immunisation was never considered.

Now for the record, I personally dont like the idea of vaccinations for every bloody disease known to man.

If my intial feelings tell me it aint right and i should do it, then i usually go with it. But again you take a risk as you do with anything.

A well reasoned argument however, the vaccination 'objectors' are like the religious; nothing will sway their faith.

They may claim the right to object to their children being vaccinated. They do not have the right to expose their infected children to healthy children and make them sick

I thought that the whole idea of forced vaccines was that they protect you...apparently not.

"Parental objection to vaccination exposes the children who are too young to make and informed decision to great risk. These parents are uninformed, overemphasise the minimal risks involved and conveniently downplay the horrific diseases these vaccines are designed to defeat. At its best it is a comparable form of parental abuse as circumcision."

Wow.

Just kind of speechless really, I guess these people speak for themselves. I'd like to see one of these diseases that was "defeated", please.
We were meant to live for so much more, have we lost ourselves?

heres a comment:

--------------------------------------

Correlation does not prove causation - just because one of your children developed some allergy issues at around the same time it was immunised does not mean that those allergy issues were caused by immunisation. There's a third variable at play - time. Maybe your kid just had allergy issues and they started showing up at the same time they started being vaccinated. There have been huge studies done on vaccination and the possible effects - if causing allergies was a possible effect, it would be known.

It's unfortunate that your third child had a severe reaction. It happens sometimes. The stats are available. But here's the thing - even if immunisation caused all the ills it's accused of causing, even if it caused autism and allergies and asthma, it would still be better to have your child vaccinated. The rate of all of those ills is far, far less than the amount of deaths that would be caused by measles, whooping cough, chicken pox, and so on.

another bunch of comments:

--------------------------

Even if every case of autism in Australia was caused by vaccination, then vaccinating your kid would still be a good idea, because they've got more chance of dying of measles in a world where nobody is vaccinated than they do of getting autism in a world where everyone is vaccinated.

-----------------------------------------------
and then the comment to follow up the one above:
-------------------------------------------------

You forgot the most important point:

No-one is dying from autism, and autism doesn't stop someone from having a happy and productive life here in Australia.

The "article" itself was a joke. It was an opinionated rant filled with hate speech. After reading the comments, just goes to show birds of a feather flock together.
