Re: What is the best country to retire to?
Israelis are flocking to Peru and ruining it. Australia is more of a liberal shit hole than the US. Uraguay has corrupt banks headquartered in the US.

Costa Rica is nice. Lots of expats but its expensive if you live in a tourist area.

Currently I am looking at Playa Del Carmen near Belize. Minimal crime. It's basically an American colony without the stupid politics. And you can buy a plot of land with a structure 200 feet from the beach for $30k. Plus I can sail there from Florida in a couple of days when the lights go out here. Talking to a realtor right now actually.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17809164

Thanks. I have not heard of Playa Del Carmon. I was thinking Belize was a little too 'wild west', plus not a well backed retirement program, plus not good health care.

The Caribbean intrigues me. What do you think of Roatan, Honduras?
 Quoting: SlimExponent

Roatan isn't a real good place now. 20-30 years ago it was. Big problems with fresh water, power and sewage. The worst is increasing immigration from the poverty stricken mainland (Honduras). Crime and population pressure is turning Roatan from an english speaking reasonably good place to a spanish speaking not so good place.

My shortlist is Dominican Republic, Belize, CR, Thailand, and I've even recently traveled to the Czech Republic to "czech it out" as an alternative location for my family and I.
 Quoting: TheBiss

Was not considering the Czech, but yes, the others. You are referring to Croatia? Cheaper than Italy and not too far away. (My wife wants Italy).

A state pension. All these sound good. Philippine you have to deposit 10k for the pension visa, I do not like that, but they speak English and its cheap.

Uruguay I think you have to own land to get the retirement visa. I hear its the safest and least corrupt.

Ecuador sound like the emerging retirement place.

These last two places, how much Spanish do you need? That is why I do not think I can go there.

In Ecuador you won't need that much if you stay in Cuenca (the retirement capital of the country which is full of expats from all over the world). However, if you intend to leave extensively, you should have some Spanish.

The Ecuadorian culture is fairly educated and most people speak some English. The country is amazingly beautiful. The people are kind.

Do, however, take very seriously the warnings to avoid taxis. I was kidnapped in one, sexually assaulted and they nearly killed the friend that I had with me. The driver and several heavily armed accomplices (2 cars and a motorcylce) wanted our money, but, wanted to terrorize us and make us beg for our lives as well. They held us for several hours- and when they finally threw me from the taxi (while moving) they proceeded to beat my friend severly. They shot at us at we ran. Long awful story... But, FYI- anywhere in Latin America you decide to go, only go in taxis that a business calls for you. This was a registered 'real taxi' that the Embassy suspects was stolen.

From what I gathered, its the baby boomers who were used to vacationing in certain locals, Mexico/ Costa Rica, and that they did not have enough SS to retire. So they pioneered this concept of early retirement in these low cost of living areas.

This is the first I have heard differently.
