What is the best country to retire to?

Uruguay or Peru

apparently kidnappings are skyrocketing in Peru as the wealth of the middle class increases, gangs from other countries are moving in to snatch people for quick money. You would think as times got worse kidnappings would increase. Not there, things get better and crime goes up.

Central America is always nice and English friendly.

Peru was not on any of the 'Best of' lists. Think it may be too cold in the mountains. Low cost of living though.

Costa Rica, Panama & Mexico top my list right now. Worry about corruption in Mexico, but very good national health plan.

With that said, I hear there is no income tax in about 12 countries, 1/2 are the small islands around the US (virgin, bahamas etc), the other 1/2 are a bunch of Islamic countries, but I'm sure they have sharia law and your life would be cut short (get it...cut).

I have a friend in Brazil, he lives on the side of a volcano, has sheep, sells his wool, lives with his parents, eats well, they live in a substandard lifestyle compared to your average American, but they are pretty happy people.
Sit around blazing fires alot, drinking beer, go out on boats, sell their knitted wares to tourists.

But you'll never have much there. It is socialist.

But you can be happy if you like the lean life. 2 pair of pants, a nice pair of shoes, a backpack, some pretty plates for momma and tea every day at 3.

Will you be depending on SS? My choices would be Uruguay, Ecuador and Philippines.

Israelis are flocking to Peru and ruining it. Australia is more of a liberal shit hole than the US. Uraguay has corrupt banks headquartered in the US.

Costa Rica is nice. Lots of expats but its expensive if you live in a tourist area.

Currently I am looking at Playa Del Carmen near Belize. Minimal crime. It's basically an American colony without the stupid politics. And you can buy a plot of land with a structure 200 feet from the beach for $30k. Plus I can sail there from Florida in a couple of days when the lights go out here. Talking to a realtor right now actually.

My shortlist is Dominican Republic, Belize, CR, Thailand, and I've even recently traveled to the Czech Republic to "czech it out" as an alternative location for my family and I.

I will have a pension, so I am looking for something on par with or higher than an American standard of living. I would not mind the lean life but I think my wife would.

The beer and blazing fires sounds great, That why I will not consider Muslim nations. Africa scares me as well.

A state pension. All these sound good. Philippine you have to deposit 10k for the pension visa, I do not like that, but they speak English and its cheap.

Uruguay I think you have to own land to get the retirement visa. I hear its the safest and least corrupt.

Ecuador sound like the emerging retirement place.

These last two places, how much Spanish do you need? That is why I do not think I can go there.

I would love Australia or New Zealand. But by the looks of it they are not so desperate for me to spend my pension there. I am not old enough for Australia and New Zealand is not permanent.

Panama uses the U.S. dollar. But I think everyone would pretty much be in the same boat no matter where where you go, unless they are overly dependent on the electrical grid there, as they are here.
