Liquid or vapor, maybe plasma, but definitely not solid. Too conspicuous.

I'd like to know what he means by "stay away from all coastlines".

What is with all of these tards who think that a gigantic tsunami is "imminent"? And how far inland do they think that an average Tsunami travels? lol...

I put these people in the same league as the "California is going to break off and sink" crowd.

La Cumbre Vieja.... Google it.
 Quoting: Uke

Not sure where "Cumbre Vieja" is, and not really concerned.

I live in the PNW near the coast, and have had family here long before I ever came here (18 years ago). Not a single one of them has been taken out by a Tsunami yet.

You don't need to worry about Cumbre Vieja in PNW. But folks on the east coast need to watch out.

My MIL used to say cali is dangerous because of earthquakes, meanwhile her hometown in N.Dakota has a devastating flood every five years or so. People turn a blind eye and always believe they are in the best place and everywhere else is BAD BAD BAD!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27815245

Well, like I was just telling the OP... I live in an area in the PNW (on the coast), and we get earthquakes off the coast here all the time. But in 18 years, I have yet to feel an earthquake here, even in the SLIGHTEST possible way.

I've had family that have been around here for many decades, and not a single one of them has ever felt an earthquake, even though they are going on offshore all the time.

Sure, we could get "the big one" that supposedly happens here every 500 years (on average), but I'm not going to avoid the area based on that... lol.

I want to live in an area that is:

1) Full of veterans and like minded people
2) Has highly dependable rainfall
3) Lots of fish and game
4) Lots of edible wild plants
5) Not downwind of ANY nuclear, chemical, or biological targets
6) Not near any military targets
7) Not near any medium or large cities
8) Is cool in the summer

9) Is relatively warm (and survivable) in the winter (no snow)
10) Has fresh unpolluted air, not counting the Fukushima aspect, but EVERYBODY is getting that.

And the coastal PNW fits the bill perfectly. There is a REASON that this is the choice of one hell of a lot of veterans. And even retired CIA!

Re: What is the Worst State(s) to be in When TSHTF?
Couple of thoughts:

How will you raise crops in an urban environment? It's nothing personal about living in one versus a rural area, just cold hard logic about the carrying capacity of a city trying to manage that many people with water alone....

It's not about you versus us.

New York has some good regions. It's not that there aren't places to go to, it's that the Horde will be close and nipping at your heels. Personally, I think I'll be in better shape in my state versus yours.

When you start to look at all of the facts about what is needed to grow your own food, then you look at length of growing season, rainfall, plant diseases in your area, quality of soil, etc. Without a massive dieoff, it's highly unlikely to survive by agrarian means in a large city. It's just common sense.

Most people aren't thinking that far down the line. They haven't imagined how they'll get adequate fertilizer to replentish the soil. That'll take a lot of people, or livestock, or both. That takes plenty of rain, for wells will probably not be adequate, and cisterns to be created. It'll take new agricultural methods proposed by the permies like Hugelkulture to use far less rain if there's continuing drought.

Think a little outside of the box.

For the folks especially in the Northeast, I'd read James Howard Kunster's World Made By Hand. It's location is the Hudson Valley. One of the best apocalyptic books dealing with the aftermath of loss of utilities, supply chains, and followed by disease....then how communities cope or become very dysfunctional. It takes place at least a decade after an event, so people are establishing agriculture or dying.

One Second After by Fortschen is grimmer, but it's immediately following an event.

Well, just come back to the PNW, OP. We miss you. :)

Besides, you don't want to live down there in Texas when the SHTF.

Personally, I think it would be one DANGEROUS place to be, myself. I've had family all over Texas, from Corpus Cristi, to the Hill country, to the Panhandle. And they have ALL moved away over the years, as they saw the writing on the wall. not to mention the millions of illegals all over the place.

I just know that I fell a lot safer up here, than I would down there. I've been to Texas about 30 times over the years, and never ONCE did I say to myself, "I should move down here."

But I realize that Texans are a proud lot, and I don't expect any of them to agree with me. It's all a matter of personal choice.

Wouldn't say state .. it would be elevation or distance from coastline ..

I have heard 2000+ elevation or 60 miles from coastline should be good .. minus nuclear disasters or cities rushing towns .. .. then basically .. we'd all be screwed .. I will bed in upper state VT by then :)

That was the Quakers, a long time ago. Amish are mostly in Pennsylvania & Ohio & some in Indiana and a few other places in that area. I worry about them; they are pacifists and will certainly be overrun quickly. They are not stupid though, and I'd imagine they have some pretty good Plan B, Plan C etc in reserve.

Have a look at this web site for a big store in Ohio that sells many non-electric items to the Amish and also to campers & preppers. www.Lehmans.com This is how they live without electricity.

Its going to be bad anywhere in this country during a SHTF scenario. Why? Because of the mentality that people have. I lived in Japan for a few years before and after I woke up and I never worried about people fighting to the death over food and water. It just wont happen there. They will sit down and die without a thought of hurting another person to take care of themselves. Obviously there will always be a few bad apples but my guess is 99% will go peacefully.

Over here? Oh geez. Metropolitan cities and the outlying areas will be the worst places in the world. Pray you live on a coast and a tidal wave takes you out quickly. But regardless, don't give in to the kind of selfish thought processes. Prepare your mind now to act as unselfishly as possible and be a good example in the worst of times. Help out women and children and give everything you have to others. You can believe that there is a reward waiting for you if you do.

I would be willing to bet that there is more canned and dried food in a populated area than there are crops ready to eat in any rural are. I think it would be easier to find food where food is stored than where food is grown.

Check food prices urban vs. rural and you'll see what I mean.

For a while after the event, then all bets are off.

AS for urban gardening, I see more successful gardens in urban areas than I see in rural.

The only real way to know is to drill. Cut yourself off from any sort of supply or aid and see how long you last. You'll get better everytime. You don't want to try it for the first time in a real event.

I'm in Texas right now (not where I wanted to be at this particular moment in history) -fortunately far enough outside a major metro area where I would be relatively safe for a little while anyway. I think Texas is probably one of the worst places to be when the dollar collapse happens. I'm hoping it holds off until I can get back to my home state of Washington in the spring.

I agree except that any area will be worse off than others. It's all per capita. Yess there will be more starving people in a city, but there will also be more sharing people.

Does small town america have food banks in the numbers that cities do? Do they have the number of churches and charitable people that cities do? I never saw many operating charities besides battered womens shelters.

Re the Japanese, I've heard most positive things about how they handled themselves in villages during WW2. There was little theft, I guess from social pressure. Today is another story entirely since the folks of that time actually grew food. They are known to be scupulously honest about a found wallet, and I'd imagine that things may be better in some ways, but there's no getting around the incredibly dense population and lack of drinking water with no utilities. Fukushima made the whole nation poisoned, and that's the worst aspect of being there.

The Amish and the Mennonites live all over the place, even in places like Mexico. Check your state, and I'll bet there are some somewhere less than two hours from you. Since they won't and don't protect themselves now, they have people steal from them, and only if county sheriffs are vigilant are they protected at all. They won't sue people in court either, so they really will be preyed upon.

They're not welcoming to strangers, though of course many work by carpentry in people's homes under contract. They prefer to live apart (Romans 12:2), and a flood into their regions is to be expected and no doubt will cause violence, mostly to them as they have farms and livestock in isolated areas.

You make some very good points.

Drills to test your skills is a very good idea. My husband and I actually did this for six weeks as an experiment (lived rural anyway) with no electricity, running water, power tools, etc. We had both accumulated a lot of comp & vacation time so instead of a vacation to somewhere else we decided to try this.

It was actually fun except for the outdoor shower he rigged up. Luckily it was summertime. We also lived near a large creek.

We both learned but the best thing was that we ended up with a long list of must haves that we hadn't stocked up on that we wouldn't have had in a real scenario unless we had tried this.

It's a good idea to try this even if it's only for a week or even a week-end. It becomes clear early on what you forgot in your supplies.

Re: What is the Worst State(s) to be in When TSHTF?
The immigrant population will be a factor.

However, they may also like to get the Americans trapped in a landlocked state.

There are some militant groups that would be problematic---La Raza, who think part of the SW USA belongs to them and radical Islamic jihadists who hate all of us.

Many of the illegal Mexicans will leave early on in an economic collapse when their EBT cards and welfare are cut off. Some are leaving even now, because of the lack of jobs.

Re: What is the Worst State(s) to be in When TSHTF?

Yes. It's extremely rare, practicaly unheard of, but no telling what happens within different isolated communities. They are pure pacifists, and won't defend themselves.

It's highly unlikely they would welcome anyone into their communities that were sojourners. The arrival of outsiders would be considered something of a terrible outside influence. Those refugees would be impossible for them to control. I expect for sociopathic people to deliberately mount attacks upon them since they have everything they need: isolation, farmland, livestock, homes, tools, etc.
