Scientists say Lake Tahoe overdue for 7.0 magnitude Earthquake and Mega Tsunami!!!

Scientists say Lake Tahoe area overdue for another earthquake

Not only that, fault could also produce huge tsunami as it has in the past, research shows

A tsunami-producing fault in Lake Tahoe is overdue for another earthquake, scientists said here Tuesday at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union.

The West Tahoe Fault is capable of producing a magnitude-7.3 earthquake and tsunamis up to 30 feet (10 meters) high in the clear blue lake, where million-dollar homes line the shore, researchers said.

Earthquakes strike every 3,000 to 4,000 years on the fault, and the most recent shaker was 4,500 years ago, indicating the fault is overdue for another earthquake

Tsunami risk
Because the fault crosses the lake, scientists worry a future earthquake will cause a tsunami in Lake Tahoe. The monster waves could form in two ways: by the fault displacing ground under the lake, similar to Japan's Tohoku tsunami, or by causing landslides that displace the water. A combination of both could also create an even bigger wave.

Layers of sediment preserved in and around Lake Tahoe record evidence of past tsunamis, said Graham Kent, director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory in Reno.

I hope the mods pin this. This is big news.

Yeah you're right....this is absolutely nothing to worry about and is a bullshit thread. So what if there is a major earthquake and tsunami at Lake Tahoe, right?
And thanks for the one star for my bs thread.

It's scientific fact! It's not a matter of if but a matter of when. Probably soon considering scientific evidence shows this fault erupts every 3 to 4000 years and it's now been 4500 yrs.

Do you realize how small lake tahoe is compared to the pacific off of japan? And how "much" water would be displaced? Yeah ok... it'd be a wave. but it's not as though it would suddenly swallow up the west coast with a mega wall of water four states wide... ffs... and being from cali... ALL faults are overdue for some crazy quake... matter of fact is we can't pinpoint when and where and how big yet and yet we as humans want to control everything so we just say oh no it is overdue even though the earth decides when it is due and not due...

This is certainly something to take interest in.

When was this published?

they published a report on the fault line that runs from NYC to Louisiana... the next week we had a 4.3 in KY on that very same fault...

and im not saying its a bs thread or anything just that... yeah it'd be a quake... and there'd be some splashing water... but what kind of real damage would there be... not much compared to a big one hitting the san andreas near LA or something... but yeah it'd shake a fair few trees for a fair few miles.

The ground luckily on the west coast isnt as tightly packed as the east coast so earthquakes dissapate faster and over shorter distances than they would say if there was a major eq on the new madrid or the eastern NA craton or some such

I'm sorry it's not doomy enough for you. I'm sure those who live in the Lake Tahoe area would disagree.
Come on, so what if it wouldn't effect the west coast, it would effect a lot of people in the area. A 7.0 EQ is not child's play you know.

I agree. HOWEVER... we live in california. We ALL know the risk we take living here. EQs are something we HAVE to know about and take into account. if you are too stupid to realize you live in quake country... well you're no better than the morons who go surfing when they hear a tsunami or major storm is gonna be hitting our shores...

and again.. im not saying this doesnt matter. its great to know about... and to be aware of... and i feel bad for them if shit goes down... but like... i dont understand the point i guess aside from maybe alerting those who dont realize they live in california/nevada that they in fact live in california/nevada and the ground can possibly maybe shake hard and create major problems for a small/medium/large area and to be aware? like... i just dont get it... and im not being patronizing... its just...

kinda seems logical to assume... shit shakes... im near water... water will react to said shaking... could do X, Y, and Z...

if the report said it could suddenly freeze the water then shoot icicles out at the surrounding landscape for dozens of miles... thats friggin weird and i'd understand. but this just seems... normal? i guess... and i havent rated or unpinned or pinned or anything... im just partaking in the conversation atm... so...

It's also popular during summer because of the combo of camping/gambling.

There's also another disaster waiting to happen in same area (in Nevada County California side).

There is a dam near Truckee called Fortis Dam. About a year ago they discovered a new fault right at the dam that is capable of a 7plus eq. If that dam goes it will flood Reno with probability of a large loss of lives.
