And what about those that live there? Also, it's a popular ski destination.
 Quoting: Nika

It's also popular during summer because of the combo of camping/gambling.

There's also another disaster waiting to happen in same area (in Nevada County California side).

There is a dam near Truckee called Fortis Dam. About a year ago they discovered a new fault right at the dam that is capable of a 7plus eq. If that dam goes it will flood Reno with probability of a large loss of lives.

You are right, it's a very popular tourist destination and for someone to say big deal....a few trees might shake, is just a very insensitive person. (Not you, hun hf)

And they just discovered a new fault line in basically the same area. Crap's getting real.

You got to realize that Lake Tahoe is 1 of the deepest lakes in the world and that will make it a very impressive tsunami for the size of the body of water. Also frozen hydrates are at the bottom and these will be released if they are churned up.
THINK ABOUT THIS!

The universe created life to be observed, without an observer, it never existed. So it is a mathematical proof that the universe created life.

Are we talking methane? I didn't even think about that.
We're talking a potential mega disaster! Not global...no, but horrible for that area.

Yes, Lake Tahoe is close to both Truckee & Reno. All three are popular tourist spots. I live in Nevada County (Calif) but hardly ever go to Lake Tahoe. It's pretty built up. Truckee is a neat, old town though.

I'll probably feel a 7 either at Lake Tahoe or the dam near Truckee but wouldn't be a disaster where I'm at. Still hoping it doesn't happen, of course, for the people that live there.

Well, knew about the Fortis Dam/Reno quake potential but hadn't heard of the Lake Tahoe one.

Thanks for posting this. 5*'s!

Thank you for the 5 stars.
Here is another new study that found land slides from Hawii are capable of producing mega-tsunamis in excess of 300 meters. And of course some asshole shill immediately shows up and one stars the thread.

Do you realize how small lake tahoe is compared to the pacific off of japan? And how "much" water would be displaced? Yeah ok... it'd be a wave. but it's not as though it would suddenly swallow up the west coast with a mega wall of water four states wide... ffs... and being from cali... ALL faults are overdue for some crazy quake... matter of fact is we can't pinpoint when and where and how big yet and yet we as humans want to control everything so we just say oh no it is overdue even though the earth decides when it is due and not due...
 Quoting: Liberty87

What do you know about Lake Tahoe? It is probably THE deepest lake in NA. There is a tremendous amount of water that could be displaced.

Re: Scientists say Lake Tahoe overdue for 7.0 magnitude Earthquake and Mega Tsunami!!!
Lake Tahoe north is experiencing minor clustering, as past of the long valley caldera, which includes mammoth mountain as well as Mono lake, it is something to watch.

Personally, I expect to see the southern end towards Ridgecrest to piss off the Garlock Fault, which it currently is. Coso volcanics which are north of Ridgecrest are currently experiencing volcanic harmonics.

The north end of the White wolf fault is the tail end of mammoth mountain which is also experiencing a series of minor quakes as well in the last 3 months.

It's going to take a lot to get Tahoe active, I'd look elsewhere first.

Re: Scientists say Lake Tahoe overdue for 7.0 magnitude Earthquake and Mega Tsunami!!!
A mega tsunami on Lake Tahoe would be a good thing. lake tahoe is an overhyped overrated overpriced tourist trap. it really isn't beautiful at all. The water is dirty brown not the sparkling blue they try to lead you to believe. Roads are horrible and virtual deathtraps. 2 way streets that are 1 lane. horrible traffic, extremely crowded and congested, highrise building condos and casinos in all places a place that's supposed to be a major tourist attraction, people there are assholes, dumpy motels infested with roaches and bedbugs, that leak water toilets that clog up unless you pay a fortune, prices that make L.A. and San Francisco seem cheap, virtually impossible to find parking anywhere, to go on any mountains there or anywhere off the main highway, require you to either hike ridiculous distances on horrible trails or drive on deathtrap roads that are 2 way and 1 lane, plus it's in Commiefornia which alone is reason to hate it. oh and good luck trying to take a boat out on lake tahoe unless your super rich as they charge you insane prices to rent or even to take your own boat out on the lake. So may places that are so much more beautiful, reasonably priec, cleaner, safer, and funner than Lake Tahoe. I don't know why anyone in their right mind would even want to step foot near Lake tahoe let alone live there. I'd live in L.A., San francisco, Chicago, or new York before I would even think about stepping foot near Lake Tahoe again.

Can you imagine? A mega Tsunami at Lake Tahoe!
I hope the mods pin this. This is big news.
 Quoting: Nika

A mega tsunami in Lake Tahoe is impossible.
Plus Tahoe is surrounded by tall mountains.
Maybe the towns by the lake would be wiped out if a really large earthquake happened but no way would the water from the lake make it over the mountains.
