What is the proper way to dispose of a bible that was ruined in a house fire?
My mother and father recently lost their home and most of their possesions in a house fire. Luckily, no one was injured and they were fortunate to have very good insurance.
It took 3 months, but they are now in a new home and have put their lives back together.

While digging through the rubble with the insurance adjusters, my brother found a family bible. It is beyond salvage. It was burned badly and also damaged from the water used by firefighters to control the blaze. My brother and I agree that it is somehow not right to just put it in the trash... What is a fitting and respectable way to dispose of it ?

(In your case I'd say just ask a priest/minister/whatever your version of christianity has, to say a prayer and have him get rid of it... probably bury/throw it out)

Damaged Bibles

1 Preserve it.

If the Bible has special significance to someone but the book is worn out or too fragile to use, consider the value of the book; perhaps it should be preserved as a family heirloom. You would not throw away a book that contains family birth, marriage and death records for several generations.

2 Donate it.

Ask if the Bible has any special features. Is it valuable because of the age, binding, printing, illustrations? If the book has other special value because of its features, you may inquire about donation to a museum collection. Or give it to someone who doesn't have one.

3 Get it fixed.

There are many places where you can get it re-bound, or glued back together.

4 Bury it.

If the Bible has been blessed by a priest or minister but you still want to discard it, you should consider a sacred burial. You may also want to consider asking your priest to perform a liturgy for the burial. In turn, your priest may consider collecting a quantity of discarded Bibles and performing one ceremony for all.

And yeah sorry but to all those who say just toss it or whatever...

take into account while this isn;t YOUR book of choice... or beliefs or whatever... it is to millions. Maybe they're misguided... or in your opinion they are... what the fuck ever. It doesn't matter.

It matters to him/her and his/her family... and to many others. So you can hate all you want and thats fine... but it matters to some and some actually care enough to know how to deal with such a situation. And i'd say have some common decency in regards to that... i know this is the internet and thats a lot to ask but ... worth a shot.

Thanks for a respectful reply...You seem to be the only one who understands that I did not ask this question to fuel any debates on religion, I simply want to do what is right.hf

hope that helps DoN. But of course. In all honesty and from my own background in religion. if i may suggest something... 1 Peter 4:11. I reckon that'd be as good as any to send it out by *shrugs*

If it's truly God's word then send it out by His word and His glory. =)

LOL and to be honest... I'd bury it myself. Then have a laugh about how in the future you messed with some archaeologists who found it then fretted over it not being complete since it was damaged. kinda like a rosetta stone (even though plenty of bibles will survive probably but whatev...) *shrugs* but thats my sense of humor and not yours.

Just burn it, The Bible is not some Almighty Power Talisman trinket, its just a book.. and there are likely billions of them called Bibles running around in good homes and looking to be in good homes.

Where your Bible really should be if you are completely convinced is in your Head, you know, ROTE MEMORIZATION.. every single jot and tittle. That's where it really belongs anyways, in your head, mind, heart and soul.

Oh, that's right, we all have been told by the Schools That Dumb Down, not to bother memorizing anything by rote.

Never mind.

ooooh someone went to the same school as me LOL... I was indeed taught to memorize it... because it is that important.

Same reason I loved the movie book of eli... granted i had problems here and there it was still enjoyable and it pleased me to see a movie where such a thing was shown.

But I disagree with the burning. Burning is for pure things. And as we know the bible as it is known today is not pure as it was and truly because it was written by man will never be as pure as it should be... hence why i go with bury it... Of man... should end as man...
