| Anonymous Coward User ID: 12774950 12/07/2012 11:06 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I was walking my dog and another dog ran across the street and attacked her. She got bitten on her paw. My vet is out of town and won't be back til Sunday. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28920579 I called another vet in a neighboring town and was told by staff that I should just wash it out with warm water. I asked about using peroxide and was told 'no'. Her paw is obviously sore and I'll probably need to put her on antibiotics but does anyone know of a good mixture for a compress to mitigate infection and swelling? piss on it....!LOL |
| Anonymous Coward User ID: 9968554 12/07/2012 11:07 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Get a hair color bottle and put betadine solution in it. Then flush the wound by putting the tip in the puncture and sqeezing the bottle. You can also gently wash the area with betadine scrub. You can get betadine at the feed store. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28920579 It's likely your dog will try to chew off the bandage and peroxide or neosporin are not meant to be ingested. Will it hurt your dog? Don't know, but there's one way to find out... Take my advice, if you don't believe me, google. I posted some links for you in earlier posts. I'm a dog guy, I wouldn't steer you wrong. You think people on here are fucking veterinarians or something? Go natural till you can get to a REAL vet. Patience is a virtue I just can't wait to achieve - CalmShock |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 28920579 Seeing the vet in less than 36 hours? No don’t use the Neosporin, can slow the drainage and capture dirt. Just flush the wound. Everything will be fine. I'm only human, it's my biggest flaw. We must all realize a sink a chair and a pillow are all luxuries of home and a soldiers helmet takes the place of all three. |

That thins the blood and the dog could bleed out. Use ice for swelling. Take the dog to the Vet as soon as possible. At the least, the dog will need antibiotics to stop an infection. |
| Sophy User ID: 18154283 12/07/2012 11:18 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Soak the paw in epsom salt mixed with warm water for half an hour twice a day. If your dog is up to date on the rabies vaccine, you probably won't need the vet. This is what my vet had me do. Also, you can give a 7 lb dog 1/4 of a baby aspirin daily, but it is not necessary for this. Your dog will lick the paw and it will heal on it's own. If redness and swelling occur, then you need the vet. |
| SilverPatriot User ID: 10518597 12/07/2012 11:21 PM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I would use a Betadine washing followed by a gauze pad soaked in colloidal silver for a few minutes then leave it open until you can take your dog to veterinarian. Additionally I would report the attack to the police in order to find out if the other dog is current with its rabies vaccine. |

She in her bed by my feet. I think her stress has subsided considerably and I'm rubbing the tips of her ears. Thanks again you fine friends, I will get her to the vet tomorrow but now she seems more comfortable having followed the advice given here. Cheers, |

Apparently according to Vet, they can recover... |
| dpepper User ID: 29305244 12/07/2012 11:28 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Ok...if the wound is only a puncture wound and not too deep...just flush it out with warm water and let the dog stay still. He or she will LICK the paw and keep it CLEAN on her own. Of course it will be sore for a couple of days...but your dog will be ok. IF you give any kind of aspirin, it must be COATED and for a 7 lb dog, I would give 1/4 of a tablet...but this is not necessary..if you let your dog just stay off her feet and REST on the doggy bed. She/He will be FINE. |

NO BETADINE! Quoting: Sophy Using Betadine Solution for Your Dog If your pet is injured and receives a minor cut, scratch or wound, you can clean off the wound with betadine solution to help prevent the risk of infection by bacteria. The open skin on his body is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. The bacteria in the atmosphere can get in and cause your pet's skin to become inflamed and infected. Left untreated, these can quickly turn into large scale infections that spread throughout your pet's body. If they reach his inner organs, they can cause drastic damage and even death. Use a small portion of betadine solution to treat your pet's minor wound or cut. If necessary, cut off some of the fur around the cut or injury so that you'll have better access to it. Gently clean off any blood using sterile water and a clean towel. When the bleeding has subsided, use a cotton swab or ball to apply the betadine solution to the area around the cut. Be careful that you're gentle so that you don't hurt or scare your pet. Here's how to clean your pets injury effectively and minimize the chances of an infection developing.... First wipe the KY/Vaseline away using a clean, sterile gauze pad. Then wash the wound and surrounding skin with an antiseptic solution such as Betadine, a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution, or an antibacterial cleanser/wash. [link to www.the-puppy-dog-place.com] |

I gave her a little food which she ate and she is now laying in her bed beside my feet. I'll need to take her outside before bed and she won't stand so this should be interesting...anyway, again, thanks for the advice. |

| Anonymous Coward User ID: 25242396 12/07/2012 11:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thoroughly clean the wound using qtips, a sanitary cloth and hydrogen pyroxide. Apply a triple antibiotic ointment to the wound. Bandage the wound with cotton pads and gauze wrap. Watch the dog to make sure it doesn't bite the bandage. See your vet as soon as possible if you suspect the dog may have rabies or if the wound does not start to look better within 1-3 days. Be sure to change the bandage regularly, repeating the entire process with new materials. |
| Anonymous Coward User ID: 25903260 12/07/2012 11:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have several large dogs. Occasionaly they decide to eat each other up. I have been down this road a time or two. Flush bite wound with betidene. Then put antibiotic salve (over the counter) on wound. Presto! If you take the dog to your vet, he will also prescribe an oral antibiotic for 10 days. Usually amoxicillin or some such. The vet may even stitch, but probably not if a puncture wound. Not a big deal. Your pup will be fine. Only his/her feelings will remain hurt. Try not to worry. Even dogs left untreated for a few days will be fine. Sometimes wounds are not found at first examination, but even they, once discovered, will be fine if treatment is needed. |
| Chrit User ID: 27088294 12/07/2012 11:54 PM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Mercurochrome, oh wait they banned it. Quoting: Chrit Iodine is good. NO ASPRIN it can be fatal. GL op Asprin is only fatal to cats and is used by vets quite a lot for bad pain It was about dosing not the drug itself. Example Benadryl; Dog takes four times the dose of a human to effect it compared to a human dose. Many drugs are just the opposite, no reason to chance anything. Aspirin will do nothing for the infection so no reason to give any in this instance. BTW I got four dogs...kinda use to this. | lassensage User ID: 11316043 12/08/2012 01:54 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Puncture wounds need to heal from the inside out to prevent abscesses..1/2 peroxide and 1/2 Warm slightly soapy water(not perfumed soap) soak paw in bowl for up to 20 min. twice a day..for a few days to make sure wound stays open and drains..Trim hair if needed for large wound. Cats are harder to soak so I usually use a warm wash cloth after the first 48 hrs. Main thing is to keep it open on the outside until it has a chance to heal from the inside out. Catch a puncture wound and treat it on the first day to prevent an abscess from forming. |
