Keep in mind that anything you put on the dog's paw will end up in it's mouth. NO BETADINE!

Using Betadine Solution for Your Dog

If your pet is injured and receives a minor cut, scratch or wound, you can clean off the wound with betadine solution to help prevent the risk of infection by bacteria. The open skin on his body is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. The bacteria in the atmosphere can get in and cause your pet's skin to become inflamed and infected. Left untreated, these can quickly turn into large scale infections that spread throughout your pet's body. If they reach his inner organs, they can cause drastic damage and even death.

Use a small portion of betadine solution to treat your pet's minor wound or cut. If necessary, cut off some of the fur around the cut or injury so that you'll have better access to it. Gently clean off any blood using sterile water and a clean towel. When the bleeding has subsided, use a cotton swab or ball to apply the betadine solution to the area around the cut. Be careful that you're gentle so that you don't hurt or scare your pet.

First Aid For Dog Wounds On Dogs

Clean The Skin & Surrounding Area

Cuts can easily become infected, especially if they're deep such as in a puncture wound (and dog's teeth do puncture skin quite easily). Here's how to clean your pets injury effectively and minimize the chances of an infection developing....

First wipe the KY/Vaseline away using a clean, sterile gauze pad. Then wash the wound and surrounding skin with an antiseptic solution such as Betadine, a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution, or an antibacterial cleanser/wash.

Thanks Silver, washed the wound and because no betadine was available used iodine. I have it wrapped loosely in gauze and for now she is not licking it. I gave her a little food which she ate and she is now laying in her bed beside my feet. I'll need to take her outside before bed and she won't stand so this should be interesting...anyway, again, thanks for the advice.
