Anonymous Coward User ID: 1110734 United States 12/08/2012 06:42 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Is it a nuisance? Is your throat aching because of continual coughing and you need some sleep? Then usually you take a cough suppressant at nighttime, but then something else during the day. Something to calm the reflexive actions of the throat muscles trying to expel an irritant. Plus something calming for yourself so you get needed rest. Make sense? The simplest cough syrup is some warm honey with a crushed garlic clove in it. I know, sound revolting, but it contains powerful germ fighters and WORKS. Then to boost your immune system, drink a small bottle of acai juice. That's important. A cough is an indication of probably a viral infection, but because as you eat the food particles get caught in the phlegm that is rising, a secondary bacterial infection can easily happen. It's why the doctor doesn't want to prescribe antibiotics, but then later if the illness does persist, it might very well have become a secondary illness on top of the first. Look for irritants in your home that might be worsening the irritation in your throat. Something as simple as woodsmoke particles (very common in Winter) could be abrasive and stiring up a histamine response in your throat (since it's raw). Make sense? This can be the reason for a hacking cough, even if it's pet dander or cigarette smoke, even strong perfumes. They all can trigger that cough response. Often, a good trick is to simply use something like an inhaler such as Primatene. It expands the brochi and extra opening allows any deep mucus to be expelled easier. Rather than spend a lot of money on a doctor visit, you might try a cheap and often just as useful solution like that. Your body is trying to clear your lungs, so if you make the orifice bigger, you make the mechanism of expeling the mucus easier. Make sense? I know it seems weird to use an asthma inhaler, but sometime ask your doc about it. This should be in your medical kit at home as it is so HELPFUL. Take a old plastic water bottle, cut a hole in one end, and spray the inhaler into the water bottle (it doesn't have to be large like the video) and breath in from that. Why? This allows the mist to mix with the air in the homemade chamber and allows more beneficial medicine to be absorbed versus a straight squirt into the mouth. It's technically called an extender, but those are expensive. This method is being used in 3rd world nations to allow the same effect to be done CHEAPLY. [link to www.ehow.com] It's very true that marshmellow root as well as licorice root can be found in herbal teas and these tend to calm down a spastic cough. You might consider: [link to shop.traditionalmedicinals.com] It's very cheap and WORKS. This tea is like a miracle. If you have heart problems through, licorice root can speed up your heart rate, so use caution if that's the case. This is the cheapest and easiest way to deal with a cough. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 20223910 Ever since I was small and I'm 50 now there is somthing that was used by my family for generations and its simple. You can get it at the grocery store. Yellow dry mustard. Get your self a can of it. Bring it home. Get some hot water and a towel like a tea towel. You mix about 2 heaping tablespoons with 6 tablespoons flour. then add hot water to make a paste. Not to thick but not to slimmy either. Consistancy of pancake batter. Pour it on to the tea towel in the center. Then fold the towel like an envelope. Lay down all comfy and place it on your chest. Cover yourself up with a warm blanket. The heat created by the mustard with it placed on your chest is like a poltice. leave it on for about 20 minutes. It will feel a little pickly but oh well. You can place another thin towel under the plaster also but don't make it to thick as to not penetrate your skin because you need the moisture from it as well to work. It will make your skin a little pink or red as well but oh well that goes away. I swear Mustard Plasters work at drawing out a yukky couch and crap. Loosen up your chest so you can breath. I swear by them. The whole family swears by them. Mom used them on us and we use them on our kids and they will use them on their kids. Your welcome. I second that about the mustard. It's especially helpful if you're nasal passages are congested as well as the cough. One can simple take a teaspoon of chinese mustard. It's loaded with horseradish and will open the sinuses. By the way, most large grocery stores carry Traditional Medicinal teas. It's inexpensive and there's no need to order it online. |

Point at back of throat and breath in sharply while squeezing gently. (it the top comes off while doing that you will die) 3 squeezes in the morning and night if you are a smoker a little more if you are not. 1% tastes better at first but 3% is more effective. A little between the cheek and gums is effective if rotten teeth are trying to cause an infection BTW. As a smoker it would take the morning cough away in 7-10 days for me then off for a month or so. |

They've done studies that show it to be as effective as codeine. And if it doesn't work, at least it tastes better than cough syrup or onions boiled in honey. |

[link to mysticalmagicalherbs.wordpress.com] Too bad that article didn't mention Mullein: [link to www.naturalnews.com] You can buy it in bulk at the health food store and the plant is easy to find in the wild. Brew a tea with the leaves, cover the pot with a tea towel and let the steam collect. Then inhale the vapors and quickly strain the leaves and drink the remaining tea. Since it's an expectorant you will cough for a while, but it will remove whatever is irritating your system. Within 24 hours your nagging cough will be gone, although you may experience occasional expectorant coughs that remove more harmful material. Good luck and best wishes for a speedy recovery! |

It's DAIRY...diary...now that's funny! lol! Sorry that you are having this trouble.... I really hate coughs! I've been sleeping with my head sightly up on a 2nd pillow and that helps at night. I have found that just chewing spearmint or peppermint gum works...but your jaw gets tired! lol Good luck! |

Pit in blender and blend fine. Sieve into a bowl. Add a cup of raw honey, one teaspoon of cinnamon and one 1/8 tsp cayenne powder. Stir, place in jar in fridge. Lasts several months. Use as needed. Take directly or in hot tea or water. |

She filled a large glass with really hot water, put in 1/4 tsp dried ginger, 1 tsp apple cider vinegar, and 1tbsp honey. She then stirred it up and told me to sip it. I remember breathing the vapor of the hot mixture seemed to help my sinuses a bit too. One warning though, don't drink down the mixture too quicky, you need to sip it or the vinegar can upset your tummy. |

Get yourself a teaspoon of that stuff and eat it slowly letting it dissolve in your mouth. It really helps soothe, but the flavor is hard for alot of people to take, so eat it slowly. Also, be careful if you have any serious heart issues or take magnesium supplements, as molasses has nutrients which are not safe with those issues. |

I had to quit taking one as it had me coughing to the point where I could barely speak without coughing. A change of meds and I was back to normal. Can't recall which one I was on, though. It's been several years. Still, various meds have different side effects--I've had erratic heart beats from a different sort, so if you are on meds, check back with your doc. Sometimes, it takes a couple of tries before you get the one best for you. |

LOL Quoting: natasha77 I thought it was allergies, but i'm like non stop now. I was given a prescription for Tussionex but its $75 dollars and i'm not filling it. I'll get honey and lemons and tea and some of the other suggestions. Eldelberry is not so easy to find, i dont think. :-( In lieu of elderberry, use fresh, peeled ginger. You should simmer the mixture and add some of the peel of lemon (at least 1/4th of the lemon). Simmer until the peel is soft and edible, which is about 15 minutes. Also drink lots of water. |
