From what I have heard and read, the military in Egypt is respected and trusted as representative of the average people... much moreso than the police, who have long been regarded as crooked.

For sure.

Egypt's army is conscripted. With few exceptions, males are required to serve, so it's composed of fathers, sons, brothers, cousins, nephews, etc., and everyone is related to someone in the army so it's almost a familial bond.

Not only that, it's purpose is to protect the country. Who wouldn't appreciate that?

This is good news.. isn't it?

Kind of what we call "pussyfooting" in American English (like one is stepping around softly and quietly, being sneaky, like a cat).

So he is annulling the decree that made him all powerful? It would still seem that he not only grants himself the authority to make himself all powerful, but also has the authority to diminish his own power.

scratching

Not like he is saying it was wrong of him to try to grasp the power in the first place.

Egypt needs to remove morsi immediately, he lost all credibility with his power grab stunt and trying to rush through this anti freedom sharia constitution. Hopefully he can be removed asap for the sake of the country. islampeace

Nope.

"the new constitutional declaration will be immune from judicial appeal"

Changing the words around doesn't mean he doesn't have all of the power.

It is now obvious there's a power struggle with the Judges.

He gave the Generals the opportunity to retire with dignity and honor. Considering they held the country together while there was no government, that was the gracious thing to do, but I don't remember anything about the power balance and whether that changed. Maybe someone else does.

Considering the age of Mr. Tantawi and Annan and their service for so many year, it was a good decision and had the support from the rest of SCAF and Generals. I don't know about the new Generals in charge so much how they are, but the new "controversial constitution" still protects the Military budget etc. to continue like before. Means nobody in Government can dictate anything or know whats with the Military budget etc., they make their own decisions on this.

That's the impression i got from the coverage back then, there was a shift in the power balance, which makes sense tbh, you always go for the military powers/leaders first if you are up to pull a stunt, the top chiefs were Mubarak's buddies. Army probably got too much power at that point, but in most Muslim nations the army always had the role and power to ensure the secularism of the govt and country, most of the times army did this with west's support. Well, at least this was the case until the Arab Spring.
