We have snow here and cold and blowing up more snow already..But its pretty normal for here.

We don't want heading our way. It will bring the country to a standstill. I don't think we'll have enough grit to treat our roads!

Freezing Britain: Siberian front brings ice, snow and -16C temperatures


Temperatures expected to dip from Sunday with frozen conditions bringing chaos to the roads later in the week.
AA warn drivers to be prepared for treacherous conditions and advise grit is ineffective below -9C. Icy gusts from the east will bring a wind chill factor of -16C next week, according to Met Office forecasters.

The situation is the most difficult in Vojvodina and there is more than 20 centimeters of snow in Belgrade. PM and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic has ordered that all necessary measures be taken. Beograd put public company says that its teams are struggling to clear the streets in the capital as more than 20 centimeters of snow has fallen in the past 12 hours and the temperature is below freezing. Dacic told Tanjug last night that he had ordered that all available machines and manpower be used to clear roads and evacuate people from vehicles that had been snowed in. The situation is the most severe in Vojvodina where more than 100 vehicles have been snowed in in northern Banat and several buses are also stuck on snow-covered roads, RTS has reported. A line of vehicles stuck on the road near the town of Backa Topola stretches for 11 kilometers and fire-rescue teams are digging up the cars and evacuating passengers.

A strong northerly flow advects arctic unstable air deep into Europe. Two low pressure areas are the focus for convection. The first moves from the Shetland Islands to eastern Germany and has strong pressure gradients over the western and southern North Sea. Initially a warm front lies over Germany and a cold front will reach the Netherlands around 12Z, occluding. The cold unstable air will move into Germany but is likely not so active over land. Its mid level cold front could trigger some isolated lightning mainly in the Alps during early Monday morning.
The second low dwells around Greece and Turkey with cold air advection over the warm Mediterranean over Italy and a plume of warmer unstable air being advected for quite a long time into southern Greece, Bulgaria and western Turkey, especially, where large 0-2 km convergence signals are produced in GFS, Vertical wind shear where it overlaps with CAPE seems to be moderate and at low levels only enhanced by friction over land. This seems not sufficient for tornadoes although an isolated one cannot be ruled out. The airmass is not quite humid enough to cause a high precipitation efficiency in storms, but backbuilding storms will likely produce local excessive rain events, best chances in the south of the level 1 area. Another level 1 was drawn for western Greece, Albania and Ionian Sea for waterspout type tornadoes. This potential exists due to steep low level lapse rates and a slow storm motion environment close to the center of the mid level cold pool.

Four people died in Croatia and one in Serbia because of the cold authorities reported on Sunday. Traffic came to a standstill at many locations, the airport in Zagreb was closed for hours. Also German President Joachim Gauck was delayed for hours flying back to Germany.”

Southeastern Europe was hit especially hard, with up to a half a meter of snow falling in the Balkan region. More lives were claimed in Poland, where Spiegel writes: “The winter outbreak has claimed 3 lives since Friday, temperatures in some regions fell below minus 15°C.”
Spiegel writes that German meteorologists at the German Weather Service (DWD) are expecting up to 20 centimeters of snow by Monday accompanied by dangerous blizzard conditions.


No change in weather is in sight: ‘Snow, ice and frost will accompany us through next week.’”

The situation improved in Croatia on Sunday, but a warning against driving remained in place because of icy roads. Croatian authorities said it was the heaviest snowfall in Zagreb in 57 years. Authorities in Serbia and Croatia warned people to stay indoors. Blizzards also hit Slovenia and Bosnia. As the storms headed east across the Balkans on Sunday, Romania's army was trying to clear snowbound roads as the country voted in a parliamentary election.

A sharp trough over central Europe will cross the Alps on Monday, leading to cyclogenesis in the Gulf of Genoa. Due to quite warm SSTs and cold upper levels, some instability will arise and showers / thunderstorms should be possible over the Adriatic Sea and parts of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Deep layer shear may exceed 20 m/s in some places but overall threat of severe convection should be rather low as instability is meager. Given locally 15 - 20 m/s at 850 hPa, one can't exclude an isolated severe wind gust or an isolated tornado due to locally enhanced LL shear. During the evening hours, strong onshore advection of moist and unstable air will pose a risk of excessive precipitation for Albania and surrounding countries.

December 10, 2012 – BALKANS - Freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall in the Balkans, that seriously affected traffic throughout the region, claimed a second victim on Sunday as a man died from cold in northern Serbia. The victim was found dead near his home in the village of Ravni Topolovac in northeastern Serbia, emergency services said. The first victim was a 60-year-old man who froze to death in his home in the northern town of Novi Sad on Saturday. Snow, accompanied by strong wind paralyzed northern Serbia and provoked chaos in road traffic, while the army and police were helping emergency services. “More than 660 people, including 30 children, who were trapped in their vehicles due to snow, were rescued on Serbia’s roads,” head of the national emergency services department Predrag Maric said. The highway towards Hungary was blocked for several hours while vehicles were stuck in an 11-kilometer (seven-mile) queue, he added. A woman gave birth in a truck as she could not reach a hospital in the northern town of Zrenjanin and named the baby girl Snezana (Snow White), Beta news agency reported.
