WASHINGTON (KGO) -- Millions of unemployed Americans have another reason to worry about "fiscal cliff" budget talks that seek to avoid looming tax increases and dire spending cuts come January.

About 2.1 million people will stop receiving jobless benefits immediately if Congress doesn't reauthorize federal unemployment insurance programs by year's end. Another 1 million will lose benefits over the first three months of 2013.

White House officials have assured Democrats that President Barack Obama is committed to extending benefits for another year. Obama has proposed the $30 billion extension as part of ongoing negotiations over cutting federal deficits.

Republicans generally have avoided talking about the issue so far. But many GOP lawmakers have resisted the idea of more jobless aid without additional spending cuts to offset the cost.

That will show a HUGE decrease in the next unemployment rate report. After all, the number of people receiving unemployment benefits is what is used to determine it. Unlike the very real percentage of unemployed Americans.

Let the benefits expire. I'm so sick of Washington extending benefits indefinitely on these unemployed people. It gives them absolutely no incentive to find a job. OK, so he wants them to be able to screw around for another year on the government? I'm as empathetic as the next person when a person loses a job. They need a few months of unemployment benefits to tide them over until they can find a job. But the benefits weren't meant to be a permanent fund for them.

They played this fear game last year too. With Bernake's printing presses at Barry's fingertips they will "save the day" at the very last minute.

You know, in fairness, a lot of people are on welfare because companies have moved their operations to Asian sweatshops.

Unless the investment comes from somewhere to create jobs, there is a need for a welfare system.

Yes, there are people who swing the lead and are quite happy sitting on their arses on benefits, but I maintain that the majority of them will go out and work if the work is there for them.

Perhaps if governments spent less money on blowing up children in dusty villages around the world, they could invest money at home to help businesses stay open and create more jobs for local people.

What will happen to GLP? I get the feeling most of us are unemployed UI collectors.
