I couldn't live with stupid. I couldn't live with bitter. I'll take intelligent and good-hearted. A man doesn't have to be dreamy cute or anything, though. Just likeable.

When I chose my husband, I went for smart. I couldn't deal with the thought of having dumb kids. The dumb kids are always made fun of unless they are great athletes or tough. Mostly, though, they end up miserable and often on drugs.

Sorry, I'd get bored with a dumb ass. Why spend your life with someone you can't even talk about interesting things with and who wouldn't understand half the things you are talking about?

Maybe it works for men to have a house slave who smiles all the time - especially men who don't like to have in depth conversations. To each, his own.

But to me a true relationship includes being the best of friends and confidants as well. And that means being able to talk about everything at the same level.

Well. To be honest, often the smart kids also end up miserable and on drugs. It's not necessarily a blessing in this world to be smart. You end up knowing things you'd rather not know, realizing too early how fucked up things really are, and knowing too young that you're not likely to have much of a future.

That being said I'll settle for nothing less than both smart and compassionate. Which, I guess, is why I'm still single... people like that are sadly rare.

It takes a strong, real man to appreciate and respect an intelligent woman. The reason such women become bitter is because they've chosen the wrong men who do NOT appreciate that in them and are usually shallow asshole as they someday find out. The stupid "good-hearted" ones usually get shat upon by their men, I've seen it time and time again. Why is there no middle ground? It sounds to me like OP is trying to justify a choice he's made, and he'll probably end up treating this woman like crap and hope she puts up with it regardless. Why don't you do women a favor and stay single? If you have to pose a question like this, you don't deserve to be in a relationship.

Makes you wonder how "intelligent" those smart women are who pick the wrong man. I guess they turn their brains off in selecting a mate?? If that's the case, they kind of deserve it.

The purpose of women isn't really for intellectual pursuit, so if a man is looking for that specifically, he has the wrong requirements in a mate.

The purpose of having a woman is to have sincere devotion and companionship, on her end and on yours. So whether she's a moran or a rocket scientist is irrelevant if she can't give you that.

I agree. That is the situation I am in, and it is lousy. She's not bitter, but she isn't smart and I have no one to talk to on my level. It is a long story, but it boils down to low self esteem, a strong sense of obligation, and poor life choices on my part. Now there are kids involved, and they don't deserve a broken home so that I can be happy. So I stay. Best advice I could give anyone is don't do anything out of obligation, and choose your significant other with care.

Everybody is different. What works for you doesn't suit everyone else.

I know my husband isn't dumb, not in his last life, so i forgive him his shortfalls in this life.
I wish I could talk to him about stuff but it appears hes not interested.
Once we are in a freer country Il try corporal punishment and threats to see if I can make him listen, think and understand.
Until then I have to overlook his lack of curiosity, deafness and such.

i want a good hearted man who is smart enough to engage with me intellectually. bad stuff can happen to people, so we all have a bit of baggage, but it's how we deal with it. nothing wrong with venting and showing emotions - that is healthy. imho, it is also healthy to be passionate about the world and want to get rid of evil and to be pissed off when it's no being done....afterall it is up to us (free-will) to make this world a leaving heaven or hell. i choose to fight for heaven on earth.
