I have never needed it before. Do all of these rules still apply?? Quoting: Etta Thanks There are different rules for graduate level students than undergrads. You will need to check with your specific school's financial aid office, or you can check online (Google). |
| FlashMob User ID: 12260220 12/08/2012 06:19 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Do you realize how much harder it is to get and obtain federal student aid and loans under Barack H. Obama? Quoting: Super Bowl Dave His administration has instituted new policies that now severely hinder anyone's hopes of either getting loans or staying in school. Everything the MSM is telling you about the economy, our government and Obama's policies are pure and utter fucking LIES. How do I know? Because I'm dealing with this horseshit as we speak. 1) New rules require students to transfer ALL credits from prior institutions where loans were used, even if this happened 20 years ago. This takes an inordinate amount of time and my school did nothing to inform me of this requirement until the last minute. 2) A new regulation called the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAPP) requires three new stipulations to obtain loans: a) You must not have been in school for a long period of time. If you've been going for six or seven years and you haven't gotten a degree yet, you are finished. b) You must maintain a 2.0 GPA. NOW, FOR THE COUP D'GRACE... c) You must first report all "withdrawals" or "Ws" you have acquired, even if you got them in 1955. You must then obtain documentation proving a "good reason" as to why you dropped those classes. Yes, I have heard people are having to prove why they dropped classes in the 1970s and they are having to get documentation for it. This is RETROACTIVE. So you are now being punished for something that was previously perfectly normal and ok. I now must file a formal petition and HOPE a panel of bureaucrats allows me to continue receive loans, because I dropped four classes in 2008 due to getting a full-time job that interfered with attendance. This will effect TENS of thousands of people, if not HUNDREDS of thousands. It already is at my school -- one of the counselors there has a sky-high pile of petitions and she says tons of people are being effected. Why? Because most people have "Ws" on their record, and just a few can set you below the required "pace" (different at various schools, but 66% at mine). "Pace" is the total number of classes completed divided by the withdrawals. This will particularly effect new students, freshmen and sophomores. 3) If you have more than 19,000 in student loan debt, you must now file a petition to obtain more. (Honestly, there are even more new regulations, of which I don't know the full details). This pisses me off for a couple of reasons. First, this is OUR fucking money. WE paid for those classes, and if we dropped them, we should be grandfathered into the new regulation, instead, it's retroactive and we're being punished. Second, Congress is CRACKING down on these student loans. They are also considering legislation that would allow them to GARNISH WAGES of those who have defaulted on loans. Interesting, isn't, that there is accountability for the little guy, but not for Congress? Not for the banks? Not for the corporations? They get the bailouts, while the little guy gets the crack-down. We ought to line up every one of those maggots in Congress, line 'em and execute them in the public square. This is the beginning of "austerity", folks. It's gonna get a lot worse. Your loverboy socialist Obama is NOT looking out for you and is NOT making it easier to go to school. FAR FROM IT. 8000 in defaulted school loans. No excuses I didn't pay them but to my defense my co-signer filed for bankruptcy and the lender told me the loan would be forgiven and I would not have to pay and the other was paid with my refund check. 3 years after receiving the loans and with no notice I was recently garnished for both loans. 15% each. I open my check one Friday and see a deduct amount of 300$. Only 2 months into the only job I've had since graduating with a 3.0 from Delaware. Next week I see 2 deducts, the other for 200$. That's per 2 weeks. I make a mortgage payment in garnishments per month. Almost bought a car when I got my job thank god I didn't. Oh, and I lost my apartment. I live back at home now. Thanks Student loans. Hey! At least I have a job right. Managing an enterprise location in MD. Thanks to my BA of Science. :) What a fucking joke Last Edited by FlashMob on 12/08/2012 06:20 PM You may fool me once. But twice is unlikely |

When I was applying for my financial aid, no one ever explained that graduating with $30,000 + in debt was a bad idea. They all said not to worry about it, that afterwards I would get a job and pay the monthly payments no problem. Problem is after years of school and the "free money" life happens. You get married, want to buy a house have a kid or 2 and then suddenly those monthly payments turn into rent, diapers, and car payments. If you marry someone who also has student loan debt, suddenly they are lumped together. Try getting a home loan for a couple just starting out that has tens of thousands of $$ in debt before they ever begin their lives together... Consider yourself LUCKY that someone is trying to step in and prohibit the ignorance of a young person from accepting a huge check without ever knowing the real price and what they will have to pay some day. |

Why should the taxpayers fund a bunch of kids going to college with such outrageous costs and no hope of ever being paid back? It's not "austerity" if you spend everything you earn, and then max out your credit cards to spend even more. |

The NUS also says students are turning to gambling and taking part in medical experiments to fund their studies. It says increased living costs and fees, and cuts to the education maintenance allowance, play a part. [link to www.bbc.co.uk] |

Tertiary education is not a right...It's a privilege. Would you want to be treated by a Doctor who was handed easy loans & grants? Tertiary education here is made easy because of past inequalities (affirmative action)which then produces all these 'professionals' who have a dangerous lack of knowledge, but looks pretty on the ANC's Communist score sheet. So what happens now is when our leaders get sick they all rush oversees to get the help they need there while the little folk are signed up to deal with a Pathway-type of health system the vulnerable in UK have to deal with. |

I found this out as I'm going to get my masters degree eventually. You still fill out your Fafsa federal aid form, and then they ask if you want to do Stafford Loan etc. It goes down the same way as undergrad through your PIN number at the federal site. You may need a co-signer if you have any bad credit at all. It is ok to have no credit, just can't have bad credit. The money goes to the school and they refund you whatever is left after the fees are all paid. The amounts you can get are determined by the school just like undergrad, but it is a separate deal. As far as paying the loans back. I have one friend who owes $35,000 and has to pay $500 a month and can't get it based off income unless she owed more than $60,000. Conversely, another friend owes $65,000 and only pays $100 a month on an income based rate. They both make in the low 30's and have the same master's degree and work in their field. It is crazy.
