| Corn Dog User ID: 29404269 12/09/2012 11:39 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have heard that community college actually has a higher graduation rate then the universities. Most people in community college are older and have direction and are very serious. Community college is cheaper and those there seem to be driven. Many people who go to community college don't want or can't afford the huge debt with 4 year schools. Quoting: Corn Dog You're right. Bring back mentorship too, that's how it was done when enterprise was still an expression of who you are at least into the 1940's. My son just came of age for current failure choices and I discouraged him past his 2 years in community college, in view of how insecure all professions are in this country. At least he/we are not indebted into this labyrinth of certain failure called america. We should wait and rethink everything we're doing. All of it. Where I live the local Davis-Bacon wages were revised. Heavy equipment operators now have to be paid $30 per hour and laborers $28, so why go to college? It seems college students get out and work at Starbucks while the poor kids go into manual labor and make a decent living. |

It's called KARMA. Ha ha ha. I was talking to an in-law (hispanic) who was smiling and laughing that he voted for Obama, and that now the "rich" people would be paying more in taxes. He was in ecstasy. So I asked him. What happens when these "rich" people stop eating at the effing restaurant where you are an effing cook? You should have seen the smile wiped off immediately from his face. The brilliant folks didn't think of that when they voted! My niece actually posted on her facebook page that she voted for Obama because Romney would take away her Pell Grant! She's getting an engineering degree and will probably be OK but so many of those getting these crap degrees are not going to find a job for many years at least not in their selected field. I mean how many marine biologists do these kids think we need? And I know a kid who got a degree in turf--I kid you not. Grass for golf courses and ball fields. That one has been more successful than most. This is really all about the government wanting to control who has access to education and who doesn't. One of the most important aspects of conspiracy theories is being able to discern when there isn't one. Oh yeah, like you'd understand anyway. Where are we going and why am I in this handbasket?. . .J. Handy |

User ID: 14634326 12/09/2012 12:58 PM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I think you're all missing the point: In a sane society and a just system and a Congress that isn't criminal, these stipulations do make sense. But in our world, this is just an example of a crackdown that will tighten the noose further, while Congress barrows 4.8 billion a day to pay for their runaway train. I've argued for a long time, get whatever government cheese you can get before THE SHIT HITS THE FAN. It's your money, anyway. It's your tax dollars. Think of it as a refund. You paid into an evil and corrupt system, you deserve to get a little back. It's game over and there's no going back. |

I have never needed it before. Do all of these rules still apply?? Quoting: Etta Thanks There is no federal money for a masters degree, you have to get scholarships & grants a different way. I found this out as I'm going to get my masters degree eventually. You are on crack. You can get federal loans for your masters Sure you can get loans, but pell grants? No. I'm not taking out any loans for school. |

Nevermind tuitions have tripled in 5 years, contentless education in the u.s. means nothing. Unless you're a corporate sellout scientist (meaning no creative freedom) you're not going to get grants which you may recall made you valuable to your country's vitality based on intellectual treasure. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16213681 The Japanese held those with artistic skill for mentoring as "National Treasures" and still do, irradiated as they are. So kill your culture by not feeding creation..we're doing just great in that area. BTW, if you want an education for your kids the closest one is McGill in Canada. They actually teach there. They "really teach" at MIT. It's very hard, because really learning is really hard. But when you get out of there, you have been well trained and educated. I've heard McGill is good too. CalTech is excellent. You can get a great education at a state university, but you have to take the hard courses, not what most people take. |

That one has been more successful than most. This is really all about the government wanting to control who has access to education and who doesn't. If engineering is where the jobs are, and it's necessary to be able to pay back education costs, why don't more people major in engineering. IT'S TOO HAAAARRRRD! Well tough, maybe they aren't good enough investments to fund their education, if they aren't able to complete an employable major and have to do an easier one instead. Relative to an earlier question, I don't think the world would end if we had no more sociology majors. I don't hate them, I don't even think I know one. But that's the point, I don't see what beneficial things they do or what they do at all. |

Why is this??e Because most Americans don't see the value of an education. They don't appreciate it, they would rather rush into the RAT race so they can buy useless STUFF! :-) The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting. Why is this??e Exactly. Ecuador is the same. You have to qualify (by certain gpas, testing scores, attendance, etc), but, as long as you qualify, you can attend for free all they way through getting your PHD. Of course, people drop off starting in 6th grade, some don't make it past that point, some not past 9th, or 12th, or whatever. This system (while I do think that stop an education at 11 is a bit drastic)allows for the most intelligent and dedicated kids to get the best degrees- regardless of their families wealth (or lack thereof). |
