If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty... Let them take arms... What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? (Merry Christmas, you guys) Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God. (Matthew 5:3) What does it mean to be poor in spirit? The word poor is from the Greek ptochos, defined as "...a beggar ...denoting absolute or public mendicancy... distressed..." 2 Perhaps you have seen programs on TV which display the utter poverty of some third world nations. They are poor to the point of malnourishment. The poor in spirit acknowledge their spiritually destitute state. Recall, Jesus told the Pharisees, Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance. (Mark 2:17) The one who follows in the path of Cain, refusing to acknowledge his sin cannot be helped by the Lord. Those who trust in self-righteousness, like the Pharisees, believing they do not need the Saviour, deceive themselves. "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God," (Romans 3:23) Until we realize that we are spiritually destitute because of our sin, we will not see the need to turn to the Lord, nor are we able to experience the freedom He seeks to give us. We must be poor in spirit. Our text goes on to say of these who have acknowledged their poor spiritual condition, "...for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." What is this kingdom? Why should it be important to us? The phrase "kingdom of heaven" is used exclusively in Matthew's gospel, appearing 32 times. In the other gospel accounts, this kingdom of heaven is called the kingdom of God. What can we know about the kingdom of heaven or kingdom of God? by the very name given to it, we should understand that it is a spiritual kingdom, designed out of heaven and owned by God Himself. Without knowing any more - what a blessing. Hosea 9:11-16 The glory of Israel will fly away like a bird, for your children will die at birth or perish in the womb or never even be conceived. Even if your children do survive to grow up, I will take them from you. It will be a terrible day when I turn away and leave you alone. I have watched Israel become as beautiful and pleasant as Tyre. But now Israel will bring out her children to be slaughtered." O LORD, what should I request for your people? I will ask for wombs that don't give birth and breasts that give no milk. The LORD says, "All their wickedness began at Gilgal; there I began to hate them. I will drive them from my land because of their evil actions. I will love them no more because all their leaders are rebels. The people of Israel are stricken. Their roots are dried up; they will bear no more fruit. And if they give birth, I will slaughter their beloved children." |
