Re: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Merry Christmas, you guys)
After the peace of the Church of Rome, to facilitate the acceptance of the faith by the pagan masses, found it convenient (sic) to institute the 25th of December as the feast of the temporal birth of Christ, to divert them from the pagan feast, celebrated on the same day in honour of the "Invincible Sun" Mithras, the conqueror of darkness (fn 74, II, p. 67 quote also in Bacchiocchi, From Sabbath to Sunday, Pontifical Gregorian University Press, Rome, 1977, p. 260).

Elohiym is Spirit and those who worship Him do so in Spirit and Truth.

Man took a pagan day and called it a Holy Day, set-apart - where is that allowed ? to mix the Holy with the profane

Yeshuah was born on the First day of the Feast of Tabernacles

And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, YHWH of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. Zech 14:16

Happy Hanukkah, Yeshuah kept It and 3 chapters of John's Gospel occur during Hanukkah

Why do you have a cigarette in your mouth I your picture? Do you know that you are causing harm to others with your second hand smoke as well as to yourself? I think it's very hypocritical when so called "Christians" smoke. How disgusting. What a disgusting picture and a disgusting habit.

Goodness Gracious, Anon. Lighten up (or light up) Dante. Op's avatar is Joan Jett. It's Joan with the dangling smoke. OP may have one dangling from her lips as well, but that's not her in the picture. Even if she's a mirror of her avatar, so what. She started a thread with the beatitudes, a message of hope among sadness, love against evidence to the contrary, and all you can do is harp on second hand smoke and how you believe a follower of Christ should front and look? Forest, meet tree. Talk about killing flys with a bazooka. Why don't you take the stick out and enjoy the message without looking to slam the messenger.

Christmas / Easter have nothing to do with God.

If you are really interested in your relationship with God, if you are really interested in how He wants to be loved and does not want to be loved, then this teaching is for you. We take a hard look at a subject that most are too scared to consider critically, Christmas and Easter. This teaching is for those that are bold in the faith, and really want a relationship with their Creator that is founded on love, in the way He defines love. Prepare to challenge your faith, and Test Everything.

how odd...

I have seen this 3 times today

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

Once at the grocery store on a discarded pamphlet...

the 2nd time someone had posted it to facebook

and now this...

its quite chilling and pretty cool

thanks for posting it

I guess I was meant to pay attention to it

Whoa, three times? I've also had someone say this to me just recently. My area was going through some bad storms & it was cold & raining. I went to store and as I was getting out of my car I noticed a man walking by in the parking lot with no jacket & he appeared as if he could be homeless.

I have a couple of warm jackets of my husbands left so I asked him if he needed a jacket. He said yes and that he didn't have one. He told me that the Salvation Army didn't have any left that fit him. I actually had them in my trunk because I had decided, a couple of weeks prior when weather was changing, that I would stop being so sentimental about my husband's things and give them to the first two people I ran into that appeared to need them. So I had thrown them into the trunk.

When I got the jacket out of the trunk & handed it to him I thought he was going to cry as he tried it on (it fit fine) but instead he said, "Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven." He then reached in his pants pocket & pulled out a small piece of pretty quartz and gave to me before he turned around & walked away. It was a very humbling moment.

I think there was a reason why I didn't just take them to Goodwill or Salvation Army when I first put them in car and that was because this man had already been there & probably wasn't going back to them.

And seeing that verse in the title is what made me click on the thread.

So thank-you, Salt, for bringing that moment back to me!

Thank-you and Merry Christmas!

hugs Salt,

Love your thread...

"Blessed are the poor in spirit" (Matt. 5:3): What does it mean?

Scripture scholars inform us that the Beatitudes are not merely simple statements of fact: they are, on the contrary, explanations: "O the blessedness of the poor in spirit!" The Beatitudes are not pious hopes of what shall be, they are a confirmation of what already is: it is a happiness which exists here and now, and which cannot be taken from us.

The root meaning of the English happiness (chance from the word happen) is an inadequate translation of the Greek word makarios —a joy independent of all the vicissitudes of life. Christian joy is unassailable; it cannot be lost despite sorrow, pain, grief, or even betrayal.

In Greek also there are two words for poor: penes and ptochos. The former describes one who has nothing superfluous; the latter, the word used in the Beatitudes, refers to absolute abject poverty, the poverty which brings one to one’s knees; it embraces those who have nothing at all. So this Beatitude is really surprising –it seems to say "O the untouchable joy of the totally poverty-stricken."

It must be remembered also that the Beatitudes were not originally spoken in Greek but rather in Aramaic. The Jewish word ani or ebion (poor) came to mean "the man who because he has no earthly resources places his entire trust in God."

With this background in mind we can arrive at the meaning of the Beatitude. "Blessed is the man who knowing his own utter helplessness entrusts himself totally to God." Such at most implies detachment from possessions for they cannot bring happiness or security, and attachment to God alone Who brings help and hope and strength. The man who is poor in spirit and knows that things mean nothing and that God means everything, the poverty that is blessed therefore is poverty of spirit. To such a poverty belongs the kingdom of heaven; and even more surprisingly it exists often in the destitute, as many Catholic missionaries realized long before the days of liberation theology so foreign to the true spirit and meaning of the Gospel. Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.

Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5

Have a joyful Christmas season, you guys!
God loves you more than you can imagine.

fyi: being "poor in spirit" means being so defeated and bankrupt in the spirit from suffering that you got practically nothin' left.

You have to admit it, what a great way to make the slaves happy (or at least accepting) of a crap life, to promise them a brilliant make believe one after death.

Cus of course god cares so little that you live a terrible life now, that he will give you a life of comfort after you are dead. Makes perfect sense.

Its as crazy as the muslims with their virgins. Dont you see a pattern here?

34“Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35‘For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in; 36naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.’ 37“Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? 38‘And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You? 39‘When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40“The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’

41“Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; 42for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink; 43I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.’ 44“Then they themselves also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?’ 45“Then He will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ 46“These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” Matt 25:34-46

28“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. 30“For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matt 11:28-30

Ok then, coal it is for you. Seriously though, I'm sorry I didn't mean to judge anyone by posting scripture quotes.
When I think of the poor in spirit, I think of someone who has an absence of hate even when suffering because they are so immersed in God's love. Merry Christmas!
