Newsflash, they make .45 cal air guns.
 Quoting: JennOfArc

newsflash, when bubba kicks in your door you dont have time to connect your rifle to a scuba tank, fill it to the appropraite pressure, load a single projectile, close the gun, take the safety off, and then shoot him.
 Quoting: EVIL_BEAN_KID

Um, they don't work that way to begin with. And I wasn't speaking to the OP at all.

And secondly my comment regarding 45/50 cal air guns was directed towards the person who said that no airgun could kill a person unless it was stuck in their eye....

I was speaking towards the differences to people who don't seem to know a BB gun, from an airgun, from big bore airgun...and the differences in takedown power. and what is available. I wasn't talking to the OP.

Also, FWIW, big bore airguns aren't just single shot. Nor are some of the higher powered pellet guns, .22 6 shot bolt action.

My weapon of choice cause Im a pretty good shot . Is a Glock 20 10mm that I keep 1 in the chamber within arms reach at all times . And if it is not within reach I have it or a .40 revolver holstered on my person everywhere I go .

I think its just silly to risk youre life with a single shot airgun. I'd think a person was trying to kill themselves if I saw that .

You guys remember the Miami zombie that ate the bum ? He was shot with a 9mm 9 times ...... *N I N E* times before he went down .

You know that raises another point. What if the attacker is high on bath salts when he kicks your door in? Or PCP ? If you miss or even hit him with your .45 aire rifle and he dont go down are you gonna be like .... " Im sorry , hold on just stop what youre doing. I forgot to grab another projectile. You know what? I was shooting this yesterday with my neighbor and I think my Co2 cartridge is empty too. theres some cookies on the counter , ya know.... get something to drink in the fridge . Ill be right back I wont be no more than 2 mins . Oh and when I get back get back in the position you were last in and let me get on target and just uhhh say something like " ok , Im ready to continue my attack " Thank you very much for being a good sport!!! wasp spray is a poison and might not stop them right away.

Bear spray is a concentrated pepper spray that if you get even just on your skin it will blister in a few seconds its so hot. their eyes and lungs will burn and swell up instantly.

I've taken several self defense courses. If you want to listen to these people. Than best of luck to you and pray your attacker is wasps and not a human that wont be poisoned because he isnt the size of a wasp. Best of luck .

Checked. Bear spray can only be shipped to NY, Michigan.

I guess wasp spray cans with some funky duct tape, say animal prints, pinks, etc, throughout the house is what I'm doing.
Bear spray also runs about 50 dollars/container.wtf

Im sorry but what jurisdiction in the States doesn't allow a long barrel firearm?
 Quoting: Dapurps

It depends on the situation. A past felon in some jurisdictions, for example, may not own a long barrel firearm but may own an airgun.

In some states, an airgun is considered the same as a firearm. In others, it is scanned at checkout with your milk.

In some states, a past felon may not own an airgun because it is considered under the same laws as a firearm after someone discovers that large game can be brought down with them.

The issue with blackpowder firearms is much the same, as are crossbows. It depends.

Once outside of the United States, it becomes even more difficult.

A valid question from the Original Poster I suppose, but maybe not the answer they were looking for.

If the intent is for self-defense without the purchasing of a firearm (which is what I got out of the question), then the logical starting point would be "what is the most powerful".

Blackpowder rifles and handguns can hold up to 6 shots. They can be very powerful, but require practice and specific skills to keep loaded and ready. First choice.

Second choice would be crossbow, followed by a bow and arrow.

If none of this matters, then a firearm is the way to go. A female of small stature and with little training is typically best served with a straightforward setup. A .410 pump shotgun is an ideal starting point.

I like my suggestion.

Sling shot .50cal lead pellets.

Also on a side note: I'm hypothetically building a rail gun with hypothetical old pellet guns and possibly an electric trigger from a paintgun.

Hypothetically

Really? Bear spray can only be shipped to 2 states? Didn't know that. Then atleast get +P freeze pepper spray but if the person is high on pcp they may run right through that.

Again wasp spray is poison made to be used on wasps. Im not saying it wont an attacker down. But , If my life was in danger Im not trying to slow the guy down before he gets to me.
I'd go with a 12 gauge . Aim boom done. Id just hate to see you spray a guy with wasp spray before you figure out he isnt a wasp . Or shoot him with a .22

I own a .22 Break Barrel type air rifle..

I have no delusions and would use my "real guns" way before an air rifle...

That having been said, my air rifle is legally suppressed and is very quiet. It throws a Pellet at super sonic speeds...

I always figured I'd use it for hunting if TSHTF....

But I'd bet a .22 lead slug at over 900 MPH might hurt quite a bit. As a matter of fact, a .22 has many more possible bullet combinations than a .22 lr.

Yes. She would be wise not to settle on wasp spray if honestly concerned about self-defense.

It is possible that she does not trust her children or has no firearms experience. However, she could get past all of that with a good quick-safe and a good firearms training course.

Priorities I suppose.

My advice to you if you could bring yourself to kill someone is get a glock 22 .40 atleast or a 12 gauge .

Whatever gun shop sells it to you ask where you can take a defense course and have a trained professional teach you. Some gun stores with shooting ranges in them even bundle gun saftey classes in with the purchase for a decent price.

And if you really dont want to be a victim and are in a state that allows you to defend yourself take a conceal carry course and get a permit to carry a weapon .

I mean if you have kids < I missed that > and you're single or alone alot I would be taking no chances with ANY SPRAY just sayin

I seriously think these people suggesting .177 pellet guns and 10/22 s dont want the OP to make it out alive.

While I have a truckload of other guns the 10/22 is a great gun. For someone just getting into guns it is perfect. Easy to maintain, and cheap and fun to shoot.

A gun is a tool, you can drive a nail with a sledge hammer, but you don't always need to.

My argument for my 10/22 is the same for my 9mm or my 5.7. Let me shoot you with it once, then you shoot me once with your cannon and we will see who dies first.
That is all...
