We're ruled by our compulsions to a large extent, surrender to your sense of your higher power. Read the Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book and work the 12 steps, apply it to any compulsion (irresistible urge to do something you can't resist) and you will be able to bring consciousness to all you do, that transcends self-centeredness.

relatedly, OP: another good way to become less self-centered is to drop stereotypes and hatred. These are symptoms of fear and insecurity. These too can be remedied through love and acceptance of the self.

eating veggies = good

exclusiveness = bad

What does it mean to be self centred? Don't confuse this with being self absorbed!! Being self absorbed is all about 'I' come first in ALL things! Being self centred is about your inner being, being the pivot point around which your world revolves. If you're not self centred, you are not balanced and your world will always be out of kilter! When this is the case, you will be of little use to either yourself or those who are your neighbours in the world around you!

Being self centred is not a bad thing as you can freely give of yourself in a balanced way but being self absorbed is never good as you are a continual drain on everything around you including yourself!

A couple months ago I was listening to a Coast 2 Coast interview and the guest was speaking about spirituality and he was a former alcoholic and was swearing by the 'Big Book' and how valuable/helpful it is. I'm not an alcoholic or anything but I'm always interested in the subject matter of self-help. Who wrote this book and how long is it?
