Military flares are designed to light up an entire battle area and they burn for quite awhile... I'm not saying that is what you saw, only that it made me think of them. Only you know what you saw... So, if you say it was bigger than that and stranger, then I'll go with that.
I think it's interesting tha they're in a nice triangle formation.
Flares often are like a string of pearls... Pretty much in a straight line.

But no smoke. The tail was the same color, but like if you would draw a spiral off of it. Even for how far away it was these things were really big, so you could see the spiral perfectly. I keep searching the net for a pic to match as well.
