BREAKING: Assad’s last warning to rebels before using chemical weapons
snip to less than 50%

The danger that Syrian ruler Bashar Assad will now resort to chemical warfare shot up Saturday afternoon, Dec. 8, after the rebels captured the “chloride factory” at Al Safira east of Aleppo. This is a codename for the Syrian army’s biggest chemical weapons store and base, which also houses Syrian Scud D missiles armed with chemical warheads adjusted to fire at Israel. Assad’s warning to the rebels not to fight with chemical weapons is taken as a means of justifying his own resort to chemical weapons and brought this threat closer than ever before. The West, Israel and Syria’s other neighbors have gone on elevated preparedness.

Without providing details, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Saturday the UK and the US have evidence suggesting Bashar al Assad's Syrian government is readying its chemical weapons.

Hague told the BBC he had from "intelligence sources" seen "enough evidence to know that they need a warning." Syria is believed to have mustard gas and sarin, a deadly nerve agent.

Report: Syrian Army seals off Damascus following attacks on the capital
Syrian government troops on Saturday closed all roads leading to the capital, Damascus, after opposition rebels attacked checkpoints in various parts of the city, activists said.Syrian state television reported that the army had "destroyed a number of vehicles and motorcycles used by terrorists" in Harasta and Daraya, key pro-rebel areas near Damascus. Rebels are at pains to seize Damascus airport and a main road leading to it in an attempt to cut supply lines to government troops, say activists.

Syria's chemical weapon potential: What is it, and what are the health risks?

Military analysts believe Syria may have one of the largest stockpiles of chemical weapons in the world. Specifically, the supply could include sarin, mustard and VX gases. U.S. warns against Syrian weapons Syrian activist: Nobody cares about us Impact of sarin attack on Syrians U.S. intelligence indicates Syria has mixed chemical compounds needed to make sarin -- a deadly agent that can quickly kill thousands.
Sarin gas is an odorless nerve agent that can cause convulsions, paralysis and respiratory failure. Nerve agents are the most toxic and rapidly acting of the known chemical warfare agents, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Sarin quickly evaporates from liquid to vapor form and disperse into the environment. It also mixes easily with water and can poison a water supply.

VX is another nerve agent that can be lethal when inhaled. It can also be dispersed in a liquid form; even a few small drops on the skin can lead to the same effects as sarin gas.

"Compared with the nerve agent sarin (also known as GB), VX is considered to be much more toxic by entry through the skin and somewhat more toxic by inhalation," the CDC said.

Mustard gas -- also known as sulfur mustard -- leaves chemical burns on the skin, eyes and even the lungs when inhaled. It was commonly used in World War I.
