New England Question: WHAT'S UP WITH THE SKY?

Hi I'm from Southern Maine and the last few days have been pretty rainy, but then the nights are filled with intense fog with none, to slight rain. But the weird part is that my walks during the day are cold and the ones at night are considerably warmer! This whole week!? The first two days i thought little of it, since I was aware of the weird Sun activity..

But my question is this..
What is the constant sound of an airplane-like disturbance constantly being heard in the sky? Something I am not used to. Since it's so gloomy and foggy I figure it might be pressure coming in from the north with maybe an actual plane once or twice making its trip to Bangor. But still this is something I've never witnessed, or maybe just never took into consideration.

The best logical answer is appreciated, even if it does make me look stupid. Just curious. Also accepting GLP humor of my ignorance of course.. Asking for it.
