It must be just a rumor because if things go down the crapper cash won't do them any good.

Now if they had said stock up on ammo it might have been more believable.

This could be related to the fiscal cliff and government checks not going out. Now here is something to think about, imagine American troops invading Syria while not getting paid and their families going hungry.

No, if all your money is in the Bank and there is a major power outage or Bank shutdown you are SOL. Cash on hand is only option(with exception of Gold,Silver,Barter).
Cash will still be good for a while, as long as there is a .gov to back it.
