I never got the habit....saw no return on my actions. However not totally guiltless....I do smoke cigars when I travel to Europe....CUBANS.....only the best!!

The U.S. federal government [central government] puts a huge tax on cigarettes [some other tobacco products like cigars, cigarillos, chew, dip, snus are taxed much less]. Individual state governments put an additional tax. There's a POS [point of sale] tax, and some municipalities like NYC have the right to add their own tax, and they do.

Where I live in Boston, name brand cigarettes can cost anywhere from around 6 dollars to 8-10 dollars a pack for the real foo-foo brands. But, you can but these things called 'Little Cigars' which are cigarettes wrapped in tobacco sheet product rather than paper, and are a little heavier than cigarettes,but have a filter and are roughly the same size as cigarettes, at around 2-2.50 a pack. You can also get tobacco products online from Indian reservations [tribal land] very cheaply, because they are semi-autonomous territory inside the United States. Roll your own is also very cheap.

There's also a big black market in cigarettes in NYC and elsewhere.

"Good weed" prices will skyrocket once the government gets their fingers in the game.

Yeah, probably most non-North Americans don't understand about Indian reservations and how they're semi-autonomous territory inside the U.S. and Canada. But, the Canadian and U.S' federal and state and provincial governments are constantly going after them to collect tobacco tax.

Once they let the genie out of the bottle they'll be no going back. They'll get their cut.

I should add the Little Cigars are taxed much less and cost much less than cigarettes because they're legally considered cigars not cigarettes [funny because cigarette means little cigar in French] because they're wrapped in tobacco sheet not paper, and have slightly more tobacco than a cigarette. It's a loop hole in the law.

It is discrimination against smokers and smokers should set up a united front and sue the government.

Well here in NC Marlboros are almost $5 a pack. I however if I buy a pack buy the cheaper brands which are about $3.50 a pack. However I buy the sleeves and then I buy pipe tobacco and make my own cigarettes it comes to about $10 per carton when I do that.

I can remember when i paid $12.50 a carton for name brand cigs,current at $45.00 per and no name brands.

Back in the day I got all of my ciggies from the Seneca's at a great savings. They swore they would never give my name out to the state/feds for tax purposes.

I used to smoke Marlboro ultra lights. But in Virginia I found an off brand called timelessTIME. They taste the same and at $21.00 a carton, I'm all over it.
