14.50 per pack for cigs in NYC

The U.S. federal government [central government] puts a huge tax on cigarettes [some other tobacco products like cigars, cigarillos, chew, dip, snus are taxed much less]. Individual state governments put an additional tax. There's a POS [point of sale] tax, and some municipalities like NYC have the right to add their own tax, and they do.

Where I live in Boston, name brand cigarettes can cost anywhere from around 6 dollars to 8-10 dollars a pack for the real foo-foo brands. But, you can but these things called 'Little Cigars' which are cigarettes wrapped in tobacco sheet product rather than paper, and are a little heavier than cigarettes,but have a filter and are roughly the same size as cigarettes, at around 2-2.50 a pack. You can also get tobacco products online from Indian reservations [tribal land] very cheaply, because they are semi-autonomous territory inside the United States. Roll your own is also very cheap.

There's also a big black market in cigarettes in NYC and elsewhere.

I smoke a pipe. I never inhale the smoke, the tobacco I use has never seen chemical additives or pesticides. I grow about half of the tobacco I use in my blends myself. Last I checked, it is legal for anyone to grow tobacco in the U.S. for their own use.

I used to smoke cigarettes. I had to quit them. They were killing me and I could notice the strain they where having on my body. Interestingly enough, there is little to no valid evidence that pipe smoking in the way I do (never inhale) is harmful. In fact, many pipe smokers like myself actually outlive non-smokers.

Now my grandmother smoked a pipe in much the way I do, and it did eventually kill her. They contributed her death as possibly being complicated by her smoking indoors. And my family buried her at the young age of 98 years. So I am reminded of the dangers of smoking. She could of had another 2-3 vibrant years....

My Aunt lived to 102,my grandmother until she was 98, they both smoked none filtered when I was young, I think my aunt switched to filters when she was 90 something, of the dozens of people from the previous generation of my family , NONE of then died from Lung cancer or emphysema.
I did have an Uncle that was killed by asbestosis when he was 80+ but he never smoked.

it's now $13.45 for a pack of 25cigs at the store where I am at. (Ontario)

In 2009 the presidents of Imperial tobacco company & also MacDonalds tobacco company (two of the biggest canadian tobacco companies) said they only receive $3.50 a pack.

The rest is all tax money that goes into the governments pockets.
So do the math , that's $10.00 tax on every single pack of 25cigs.

A carton of 8 packs of 25cigs (total 200cigs) costs around $89.00

It's pure robbery.

Solution::: Go see the indians on the reserve & get a case of 50 cartons (total 10,000cigs) for $420

Just dont get caught, because then the government will seize your house & vehicles.

I find the indian cigs taste more like american tobacco flavor than the canadian tobacco flavor.

Yeah, probably most non-North Americans don't understand about Indian reservations and how they're semi-autonomous territory inside the U.S. and Canada. But, the Canadian and U.S' federal and state and provincial governments are constantly going after them to collect tobacco tax.

I can remember when i paid $12.50 a carton for name brand cigs,current at $45.00 per and no name brands.

I remember when they were 9cents a pack in the navy. 1955.

Buying for personal use on the reserve is legal I think, in Ontario. It's only illegal to sell them (or move them over borders)

maybe if you only buy 1 carton at a time or something like that?? im not sure - I know tourists passing thru can buy a couple packs or cartons no prob,,
but usually any white man who does not live on the reserve will get busted for "contraband cigarettes" as soon as he leaves the reserve with the cigs,, happens all the time around here
