M7.3 quake caused reaction inside Unit 1 at Fukushima Daiichi — Indications are that something corium related is going on
Unit 1; Post Quake Reaction & Torus Oddity Indicate Larger Problem

We have reported extensively about a phenomenon going on inside unit 1 since the accident. Whenever there is a strong quake, the radiation in the Drywell B sensor goes up considerably, pressure and other readings tend to also fluctuate in unison. After the initial meltdowns these reactions were quite intense. Now 1 year and 9 months into the disaster we still see this same activity.

The recent 7.3 quake at Fukushima caused this same reaction.

[...] the reactions post quake and the ongoing hydrogen issue in the torus indicate something corium related going on in the torus.

[...] it appears hydrogen may have been increasing inside the torus after the previous purge effort, indicating the possibility of some sort of ongoing reaction in the torus.

This ongoing hydrogen reaction in the torus along with continuing to see post quake activity in the same area of the reactor indicate a continued event in the torus that can be picked up by the Drywell B sensor.

Status of TEPCO’s Nuclear Power Stations after the Tohoku-Chihou-Taiheiyou-Oki Earthquake Date: Oct 23, 2012

At 9:37 AM on October 23, continuous nitrogen injection into Unit 1 suppression chamber was started. The nitrogen injection is planned to be continued for about a month until the hydrogen concentration in the suppression chamber is reduced to approx. 2%.

SimplyInfo: “This indicates that the current known level in the torus air gap is over 2% air density. 4% is the point where an explosion becomes possible.”

Mainichi: There is a danger of a hydrogen explosion if hydrogen levels reach 4% with more than 5% oxygen

There has been a seismic event 150 miles away from Fukushima. There are some reports of damage, but the spent fuel pools at the Fukushima Daiichi complex seem to be intact. We will bring more information to you as it becomes available.

A friend of mine heard from a photographer who was sent to take pictures of reactor4 that it looked like it was about to fall down. Fukushima workers tell it to each other “Come back safe” when they go to reactor4 they say. It scared me.

Journalist: Trouble reported at Fukushima Daiichi after M7.3 quake — Gov’t and Tepco officially saying ‘no problem’

(An anonymous source from the inside of the government) At this moment, none of the emergency was reported due to the M7.3 at this moment. However, they reported to us the troubles such as cables were unplugged or pressure went out of control etc..While those troubles were reported to us, Tepco and the government officially announced there was no problem at the plant [...]

Japan media reported spike in radiation releases at nuclear fuel plant after recent M7.3 quake (VIDEO)

What Are The Consequences Of Siting A Nuclear Plant In a Seismically Active Area?
At 5:00 in

Nuclear Expert Arnie Gundersen, Fairewinds Energy Education:

Nikkei, the news service, is reporting that at the fuel processing plant [in Aomori], which is nowhere near the center of the earthquake, there was also a spike in radiation releases.

Re: M7.3 quake caused reaction inside Unit 1 at Fukushima Daiichi — Indications are that something corium related is going on
At ~4:30 in

Nuclear Expert Arnie Gundersen, Fairewinds Energy Education: I don’t believe that what Tokyo Electric said [after the M7.3 quake] is true. They said, ‘Don’t worry be happy, everything is fine.’ There’s some indications of a problem in Unit 1 where the — this is at Fukushima Daiichi — Unit 1, where the hydrogen gas started to increase after the accident. It’s still not at explosive levels, but it’s gone up dramatically.

At ~12:00 in

Gundersen: I’m sure that components that were already damaged fell. They’ll go back in that building, and things that were hanging on the ceiling have now fallen on the floor. They weren’t usable before now they’re certainly not useable. It’s almost like after a hurricane, you have a lot of tree limbs that are still stuck in trees so the next storm that comes through those tree limbs that come down. So the same thing is going to happen in each of the Daiichi Units. They are going to see damaged components get more damaged or in fact fall to the floor.

Re: M7.3 quake caused reaction inside Unit 1 at Fukushima Daiichi — Indications are that something corium related is going on
Nuclear Expert Arnie Gundersen, Fairewinds Energy Education: The fuel racks are going to be damaged. What that means is the box of spaghetti is going to be dented.

So when they go in to try to pull the fuel out, they’re not going to be able to, some of that fuel is going to be stuck, like spaghetti stuck in a box.

An earthquake like this most recent one likely caused more damage, or it caused more crap to fall into the pool. And as particles fall into the pool again it’s going to change the friction that’s required to pull out this spaghetti in the box — to pull out the nuclear fuel.

I think what they’re going to see is they’ll go down with this long handle and try to grab the fuel on the top and if the fuel is undamaged and the rack is undamaged it slides out pretty easily. If the fuel is bent or if the rack is bent, it doesn’t. So what they can do is they can crank up the power and pull a little harder. The problem is that this is spent fuel so it’s brittle, and if they pull too hard they’re likely to snap the fuel and what that can mean is a gaseous release of radiation.

So that was a long prelude to answer your question, why are they building these roofs over the fuel pool? Is that they’re afraid that when they come to pull the nuclear fuel, they’re going to snap some of the bundles and they’re going to release radioactive gases.

*Just In* Fukushima Worker: Concrete reinforcement of Spent Fuel Pool No. 4 is terribly deteriorating… now in a “dangerous state” — Cooling system stopped working, men helicoptered in

On December 11, 2012, Japanese journalist Iwakami Yasumi received this email from Mitsuhei Murata, former Japanese ambassador to Switzerland

I received this message on 12/9/2012.

The pump of the SFP in reactor4 had been having the spotty trouble, but it went out of order on 12/8/2012 at the end.

Nuclear workers were collected for emergency to replace the pump but it takes more 2~3 days to fix they say. (Extra workers were brought by helicopter even at night.)

According to a nuclear worker collected for emergency, the concrete to reinforce the SFP is terribly deteriorating to be in the “dangerous state”.

[...] a former executive manager of a major company commented this, which is very insightful.

“My fear has come into the truth. If it was merely the problem of the pump, it wouldn’t be such an issue but if the base to support SFP4 has some damage where we can’t see, the situation is much more serious.” [...]
Ambassador Murata: “I sent this email to all the chief editors of national newspaper companies, NHK and influential people of major mass media but they all ignored it. I was shocked. I called the manager of disaster headquarter of Fukushima prefectural government but he didn’t know that. It seems like they didn’t report it to Fukushima local government. ”
