Probably because they were to radioactive to eat.
Better to have them "stolen"than to have to announce that they are to radio active. That could create panic.
Think Fukushima.

I'm in the scrap metal industry and its common for trailers of scrap to be stolen.
Now, every corporate meeting held regarding stolen scrap, the stolen walnuts are mentioned.

It's really easy to steal agricultural stuff and it's worth money, so why wouldn't walnuts be stolen? People are desperate for $$$, out of work, also criminal element in full swing.

Maybe it's someone stocking up to live underground. I bet nuts stay good for ages and they're a source of protein.

IDK about radioactivity in nuts, but I would skip on eating outdoor grown mushrooms for the next decade. Those things soak up radiation from the environment like you wouldn't believe.

This is it, I've read many stories recently about thefts of hay and whatnot as well. People have horses or other animals and can't feed them, or simply want to resell what they take.
