Jews, Christians, Muslims, Bahaí and Atheists could live in ONE street in Iran before the Islamic revolution. They were all friends and got along, inviting each other for dinners and festivities. I know this because my family lived in such a street.

and how could they know, around the 7th/8th century ( if I remember correctly they converted around that time) what will happen 1300 years later? how are you so sure, that back then, when the political structure of the world was much different, what purpose did religion serve for them? we kind of know the history of their Empire, at least we know they didn't conquer anything, and didn't make anybody convert, because if they did so, all of eastern europe would have been jewish. and after the end of the Khaganate, other than just a few jewish persons who did play an important role in history, the overwhelming majority tried to live their lives quietly around Europe.

conversion to Judaism is still allowed today, although there are strict rules. I have to refer back to the fact that we don't know much about the Khazar Khaganate. We cannot rule out that they might have been converted by 'original' jews. Because I cannot really imagine that a Torah just hit them in the head one day... they had to somehow learn about it, the teachings, learn Hebrew etc.
