It is really a sad situation for this country to be in. I expect that most of these people really need the money to survive.... I just doubt that anywhere near this many are entitled to it.

I am all for a legitimate safety net for my fellow Americans, I am absolutely against all of the illegals that are getting the money AS WELL as the new immigrants, that the FEDS allowed over here knowing that they immediately qualified for this money.

My wife's cousin, a green card holder, brought his wife and three kids over here... and they immediately started getting $700 a month in foodstamps (Texas STAR). The asshole has a job, but he sends most of his money back to his mistress -- so she can feed the kids he has with her.

He is desperate to get back to be with her -- and never to return to the USA... I can't wait to see what will happen with their benefits when he takes off and forfeits his green card... the estranged wife and kids will probably get even more money. His wife hates this country too... wants to go back to her home country. So we will be giving money to people who hate us and are here pretty much just because they get a free ride on our dime.

you can apply for FS on-line ... if you qualify (based on household income) they will set up a telephone interview, and arrange to send you a card

you can buy any food items - yes, cakes and appetizers, but you can't buy booze or cigs ... Costco takes EBT cards - I am not aware of any limits on items ... but can tell you, from experience, that when your "allowance" is limited to a hundred dollars a month (per person) then you have to shop very carefully ... just try to live on that amount ... and you will see that getting FS - is a last resort to starvation - all you can really afford is mac and cheese and raman noodles - if you plan on eating all month

In the state I live in you have to apply for food stamps at the state Division of Family Support office. They take into account how much your income is, how much money you have on hand, how much your rent is, etc. and go by some formula to decide if you're eligible for assistance or not.

I'm 56 years old and draw Social Security Disability. I worked manual labor jobs all my life and paid into my account so I don't feel bad about it either. They determine how much your benefits are going to be by the amount you paid into your account and I get a grand total of $930 a month Disability. That make me eligible for $16, yes, sixteen dollars, a month food stamps. The price of food is a real issue for me and you won't see me buying Porterhouse steaks, chips, candy, or microwave foods.

I've learned to live within my means and to get by on the money I have to work with. I pay cash for everything and don't have any outstanding bills, if I can't pay cash I can't afford it. I live in a small 4 room apartment that consists of a living room, bedroom, kitchenette, and bathroom. My car is a 1990 Chrysler, but it still runs good and is paid for. I spend most of my time at home and a tank of gas will last me more than a month. I don't have a credit card or a cell phone, don't smoke cigarettes, and don't do drugs or drink alcohol.

I'm happy with the like I lead and have it better than a lot of people, but it's a long way from a life of luxury.

With our changing sexual habits and acceptance of single status, raising divorce rates are sending people to the poor house as well and getting them on food stamps. How many single moms are on food stamps? how many dads that lose half their paycheck to child support are on food stamps?
