Top 10 Packaged Foods You Should NOT Buy!
1.Canned soup: This typically contains large amounts of processed salt, additives, MSG, and genetically engineered ingredients. Many companies also still use cans with bisphenol-A (BPA) in the lining. This plastic chemical has been identified as a potent endocrine disruptor, which means it mimics or interferes with your body's hormones and "disrupts" your endocrine system.

Fortunately, making home-made soup is easy to learn and ensures you know exactly what's in it. Jane offers three soup recipes in her Grist article.1 The Internet offers countless more. She also offers the following three tips:

1."Sign up for a CSA [local community supported agriculture] box and you'll have lots of crazy fruits and vegetables on hand to make soup.
2.Invest in a hand blender... we use ours every single day and it's so much easier to blend the soup right in the pot.
3.Make your own stock!"

2.Stock and Bouillon: Making stock is even easier than making soup. Instead of composting potato peels, onion skins, leek tops, eggplant stems and whatever else you happen to be left with, freeze them and make stock when you have enough to make a batch of vegetable stock.

3.Canned Beans: Just like soup, beans taste better and fresher, and are better for you, if you buy them dried and prepare them at home -- and again, this way you'll ensure your beans aren't laced with BPA. CookingManager.com offers all sorts of cooking tips, including how to prepare dried beans from scratch.3 Commercially prepared beans are also typically cooked at very high heat for short periods of time, which is not as good as cooking them longer at lower temperatures.

When foods are cooked at high temperatures, advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are produced. These compounds, which stimulate cells to produce proteins that cause inflammation, can be toxic to the body. AGEs are normally produced at a slow rate, but the rate increases when food is highly heated. There is also a substantial body of evidence supporting the notion that heat treatment of food alters, damages or destroys many nutrients in the food.

Think dried beans are too time consuming? Consider Jane's comment on the matter:

"In reality, it takes around three minutes to put the beans in some water, another minute to change that water during soaking, and then about five more minutes to put them on the stove. All the beans you'll eat all week in less than 10 minutes."

4.Hummus: Making your own hummus using fresh chickpeas takes just minutes once you get the hang of it, and gives you the freedom to season it to taste.

5.Cereal: Most cereal is a combination of high-fructose corn syrup and GM corn, and cereals marketed to children are the worst offenders. According to one 2008 study, one serving of cereal equated to 11 percent of the daily limit of added sugar for active boys aged 14 to 18 years old, and an astounding 92 percent of the daily sugar intake for sedentary girls aged 9 to 13.4

Reducing sugar intake should be on the top of your list regardless of whether you or your child is currently overweight, because it's been proven over and over that sugar increases insulin levels, which can lead to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, weight gain, premature aging, and more.

While the featured article points out that you can make muesli in a matter of minutes, sans added sugars, I don't recommend eating grain carbs for breakfast, even if it doesn't have any added sugars. Instead, I recommend focusing on protein for breakfast, such as easily-digested whey protein.

Look for high quality whey protein derived from grass-fed, non-hormonally treated cows that's been minimally processed. This ensures it still contains beneficial immuno components, including immunoglobins, bovine serum albumin, and lactoferins, in addition to all the key amino acids and other beneficial nutrients you typically get from a high quality whey protein. Organic, pastured eggs are another excellent breakfast food, as long as it's consumed as close to raw as possible. Avoid scrambled eggs, as cooking destroys many of the beneficial nutrients.

6.Microwave popcorn: Perfluoroalkyls — chemicals used to keep grease from leaking through fast food wrappers — are being ingested by people through their food and showing up as contaminants in their blood. One common source of these hazardous chemicals is — you guessed it — microwave popcorn bags...

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has been linked to infertility and a slew of other health problems. For example, these "gender-bending" chemicals can disrupt your endocrine system and affect your sex hormones, but they've also been linked to thyroid disease, cancer, immune system problems, and increased LDL cholesterol levels.

Popping popcorn "from scratch" on the stove is simple, and gives you the option to salt and season to taste. I recommend using tasty and nutritious Himalayan Pink salt instead of processed table salt. Microwave popcorn typically contains harmful trans fats (although some brands will use the healthier palm oil rather than canola or soybean oil). If you choose to consume popcorn (it is not the healthiest food out there) you can at least use organic corn and a far healthier oil like organic virgin coconut oil and smoother it with raw grass-fed organic butter.

You will suffer from one of the following:

Diabetes

Alzheimer's

High toxicity foods keep the immunity working on the removal of said toxins. This means cancers and other diseases are not taken care of by the body.

It is imperative you keep yourself healthy, otherwise don't be surprised when sickness, medical bills, pain and pre-mature death result.

It's a common misconception that ORGANIC food is more expensive..

The de-nutrification of foods in all products including fruits and vegetables is startling. It may look like an apple, but there's very little apple inside.

As such the body is always hungry and we eat more.. and more. This is why America is the most obese country, their food is garbage.

If you buy WHOLE ORGANIC foods, your body will be full.

Don't believe me? Try it for a week... 100% ALL ORGANIC.. and you won't believe how little you crave food. The body wants nutrition and about 2000 calories a day... however if the nutrition isn't there it will gladly pack in 5000 calories a day.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to do the math... if a GMO apple costs 50cents and an organic apple costs 80cents, but keeps you full for twice as long.. then in fact it is cheaper.

Now when you consider this, consider how little you'll be paying doctors.. as you'll never be sick.

Processed salt is "table salt". Table salt contains sodium chloride and about 3% iodine.

"Salt" has 86 nutrients and minerals. These are taken out during processing.

Yeah I will second this statement. Its way cheaper to eat fresh produce then processed food. I'm also going to recommend vegetarianism also cheaper then eating meat. I think the problem is that you need to know how to cook, and many people don't know how. Eating raw is excellent too, but that gets to be a little extreme for people.

I recommend getting a centrifugal hard-vegetable juicer these are available at thrift stores for 5-10$. When I buy vegetables for the juicer I don't even think about it that much I just buy whatever looks like it will fit in there and has allot of juice. Carrots are a really good place to start.

I also recommend getting a blender and eating smoothies, esp banana and berry smoothies. Mix your whey protein and molecularly distilled fish-oil into the berry smoothie and you will be well on your way to major health benefits.

The heat-generated (friction) with a centrifugal juicer kills about 80% of the micronutrients. While this is an excellent start, a proper cold-press juicer would be the long-term solution.

Yeah I know although I think that concern is vastly overblown, also the compression from a hydraulic press is going to cause some heat as well. I have measured the temperature of carrots before and after juicing and the increase is barely measurable. Try pouring water through a juicer at room temperature and see how much it increases, it on the order of 1/100th of a degree. I think that if you are talking industrial scale it might matter, but they pasteurize factory juice anyway. They enzyme destroying heat of the centrifugal juicer is a story used to sell crazy expensive juicers, like the norwalk.

That being said, I have a hydraulic press that I built instead of getting the norwalk, although I use their filter bags. The main benefit from the press is that you get all the juice there is. You can press out another half cup of juice or more from the pulp left over from a centrifugal model. The stuff truly is so dry and depleted that animals don't even eat it (maybe goats).

Same thing with the Nutri-Bullet....which is partially why I switched.
(...getting the fiber itself to feel fuller was the other)
It totally pulverizes everything...seeds and all ...right down to micro-nano sized goodness.

I get the "salt" question all the time here in the store. There is a huge different between natural salt and refined sodium chloride. [link to www.thegrainmillwf.com]

I don't recommend the natural salt for making cheese though. It has some water insoluble minerals in it that leave little crunchies in your cheese... No fun to eat.

I might be missing something as I don't have audio, But it looked like the juices were about the same temperature, I wonder what the precision of that thermometer is like. Well fuck, I eat 9/10 of them on a regular basis, and have for over 20 years. Am I going to turn into a large, unsightly tumour?

You will suffer from one of the following:

Diabetes
Cancer
Alzheimer's

High toxicity foods keep the immunity working on the removal of said toxins. This means cancers and other diseases are not taken care of by the body.

It is imperative you keep yourself healthy, otherwise don't be surprised when sickness, medical bills, pain and pre-mature death result.

What is premature death? How do you explain the people who are raw foodists/vegans etc., that die of various cancers and mental decay?

We eat a lot of popcorn but always cook it on the stove. We use Ghee instead of butter or oil. It's much healthier and has a nice buttery taste. google it.
