In the book, 1984, it was Winston Smtih's job to rewrite history.

How much easier rewriting history is in the computer age.

The problem with getting people used to studying solely on laptops is that the knowledge can be taken away with the government's shiny "new" EMP missile. Paper books are far more resilient, except to fire.

I fully agree with any and all of the replies above. The stupidity of this move is unequaled. We have been dumbing down the essential curriculum for 30 years now. I assume we are really looking at a cost saving measure here. The damn bean counters and supposed curriculum co-ordinators will be the death of what once was a stellar program.

Children are way more sensitive to WiFi than adults.

The WiFi causes damage to DNA.

All these 'educational experts' around the world are so stupid they are going to cripple future generations, load them with cancer, and somebody's kids are going to end up sterile.

Germany, however, is taking a stand against this; they are also rejecting nuclear power. The Reich may be the only ones to survive.

This man Jamie Trower went public a few years ago, and there are several videos of his interviews on YouTube. His knowledge and courage are devastating.

In the clip above, he is addressing a meeting of the Welsh government.

Uh, no. I went through school and I don't trust them. As a parent you do have the right to see their outline of the classwork that they sent to the state. With her "trust me, haha" I would take it to the principal and the School board.

I was told by my son's history teacher Shiloh didn't happen, because the school system didn't want to teach the Civil War, even though I took my son to the battlefield that summer. AKA "trust me". Sure, uh huh, I trust ya.

Yes! Also, with online courses (at least at college/university level), once the semester is over, you lose access to the online content. I'm not against computers as an adjunct to teaching, but people need real books, and need to be able to write a paper.

Why? Because they made you buy them in the school bookstore? I've gone through that myself. What a lot of schools are doing is publishing "custom" books for a course. That made me so angry, I got a used book, by the same publisher, which had essentially the same information, and had the instructor mark it up for me so it matched the "custom" book which cost FIVE times as much! Since many of my classmates weren't actually paying for their books because they are multigenerational welfare freeloaders, they didn't care about the cost. I did.

Wonder how parents are going to view the material? Well, those of us who do anyway? We already aren't allowed to see what books are going to be used until the first day of school, and then we have to go to the school and look at them because they are not allow to send them home.. I have two first graders and a third grader.

And to the person who asked about whose paying for internet connection, if it wasn't answered yet,
I know at the beginning of the school year, low income families are offered high speed internet connection from our cable company for free or $10 a month (depending on finances). This year they also added getting a computer for low income families for $100 (couldn't get a free one~ I'm sure that will be next year)

^THIS^ We are in Western North Carolina and since my son started 6th grade this year, he does not bring home any books for homework, only copies of pages. I asked him why and he says they don't have any books. This amazed me so when I went to my sons 6th grade "open house" and asked his teachers if I could look through any books she was using to teach my child, she acted offended that I would even question what he was taught and proudly said that they had moved beyond books in the classroom and were using a newly revised teaching method. When I asked her how, as a parent, we can know what our child is being taught this way, she said with a wink...."You'll just have to trust us." But you can supplement the lousy curriculum with your own teachings. Like math workbooks from book stores, and even the Dolch word lists are on the internet. Make them earn a prize or save up points for something special for them, maybe a trip to somewhere they like. The school does not need to know, it is none of their damn business what we teach our kids in our own homes. And I don't mean lay it on thick, just a bit and over time it will make a difference.

The problem with California shools is Marijauna. The schools are overrun with weed. The kids are all stoned and that is why the school system is failing. Legal weed is a curse that is ruining are youth. I know from experience. They can make all the changes they want but weed will keep the kids stupid. California is a Narco state at this point.

They speak Spanish all day, then get to school and can't speak fucking English.

They bring everyone else in the class down.

I take online classes and I get charged over $100 a class for "materials". Theres no way around it unless I buy the book. I have done that in the past, but only when I can have it delivered quickly without costing an arm and leg. Keep in mind my classes are only 5 weeks long so I need a book before the end of the week if I have an assignment due. Although, honestly, I almost never read my books. I can download them, but I still need my password to access them and I think they are gone forever when my class is over.. how sad/sick is that

Better keep on printing books.

To me, this is scary. I think about all the knowledge that was lost when the library at ancient Alexandria was destroyed, all the knowledge that was lost when the Spanish invaders destroyed the records of the Indians in South and Central America.

What do we know about ancient times? Not much. If we don't have some physical record of our history -- what then? We're only one disaster away from having our history erased.

The "Paperless Society" so good for our environment! Saves the trees! Puts us only one really big disaster away from ignorance of a lot of information.

Re: State of California school system gets rid of books
I still like to buy books and hold and read them... flip throught the pages.... and write notes...

how every student would have a laptop, books were to be virtually phased out – but some new books would be created for this whole new education system
According to vocabulary tests, Californian fourth grade and eighth grade students are almost at the bottom of the list, excepting just a very few other states; and this, despite heavy injections of vast sums of money.

So they found a solution !

"The test, known as the Nation’s Report Card, also showed that California is doing worse than states spending less on education.

So much for lack of money being a problem.

Then there was the school-board meeting I attended where there was a complete computer presentation of a new method of teaching that is now being implemented in the schools.

I had no idea what they were talking about.

They explained classes would be reconfigured, curriculum content was being revised, teachers are being retrained on how to teach and what to teach, how every student would have a laptop, books were to be virtually phased out – but some new books would be created for this whole new education system.

We were told it would take a couple of years to get everything in place, but by the time that happens, it would be in every school and every grade in California."

So books and outdated teaching methods are being blamed.

Are they sure a certain change of mentality in pupils and parents didn't play a part in it ?

And pres. Obama, according to the article, seems to be mighty proud of this "accomplishment."

Mine were in the public school system several decades ago, and it's the biggest mistake of my life. Far worse now.
If I could live my life over, the one thing I would change would be to keep my kids out of the public school system!
Still living with the damage!

Online learning will allow content to be presented in Spanish. Maybe easier tests in Spanish too. Anything is possible.

I think the problem in California is twofold:
(1) Non-English speakers
(2) Discriminating against native English speakers to serve the primary mission, which is (1)

And (1) never turn into good students anyway, at least the dominant population of them that's relevant to California, it isn't primarily a language problem! So everything goes slower and slower so as to reduce racial disparities, which are said to be a terrible terrible thing. They sacrifice the most promising ones for this!

Learning algebra in 7th and geometry in 8th is even quite unusual. In our school system, the accelerated track (in which you get calculus in 12th grade) has algebra in 8th and geometry in 9th. The slower tracks are a year behind, if they even have the same courses at all.

But there is some "introductory" material, like classifying shapes, in earlier grades. That's not a real geometry course by a long shot. A real geometry course eventually requires you to write simple proofs. Is that what you are referring to?

On another topic, then after Geometry math seems to slow down. There's no reason 2 more years (algebra 2, then "precalculus") are needed before calculus. You should take calculus in 10th or 11th grade, for the able students. But then there's a problem: what do you do with those students in 12th grade? None of the public school teachers are capable of teaching beyond intro. calculus, so they stretch out the curriculum to keep the kids busy all 12 years. I don't think this is any better in private school, where the teachers are paid even less.

Stop teaching them to memorize and instead teach them to think and apply all to what their own minds relate apply it to...

Find the why in all things instead of demanding the what.

Who cares if you can camp out the what from your forced into memory even to the question on a test giving me an answer....even by this same old worn out tired of repetitive way action memorized.

Who cares is you know how....to give me a what.

You give me the why to all that is.

Then you apply that why to what ever comes out of your own mind spontaneously with the what standing as the conclusion.

You step out the way your own way...

You give me the what your own what...

Home school in hell apply this to all from humanities to math to writing to acting to war to construction to government to economics.

No such thing as honoring ancient peoples and places honoring history in every thing you do or are shown..
No need in glamorizing and worshiping the man or woman who had a thought..

This is a waste of time...and misdirected character.

Who cares about what is not any more....it is gone long gone.

Who care about what they did or have...whats that got to do with you.

Whats that got to do with what is not as of yet.

Because all of that comes from you...yous.

Here's the core of what is now in all things.
Do you see the why it still is.
Do you see what it is and is doing.

Now forget that which you saw and do your own thing.

Even by undoing that what that is...by your own why.

And doing it your own way.
Somethings are good cores and you add to this build on them..some not.

That was how we did our son.

And he is hated.

All that is fine when these kids with talent reach High School. Prior to that I must say you don't have a CLUE. As children grow up their brains are changing just as are their bodies. We have learned that certain activities related to certain courses develop the brain and that is where curriculum and delivery must be pointed.

It is about erasing individuality and uniqueness by individuality for their perverted diversity.

Their diversity is by groupings.
They group and class and this by labeling specimens.

Yet this takes individuality away and give it to the majority by mass groups demands.

In the end we have One massive group of One mind and One accord.

And all have lost their own identity and individual life and way of life.

To the ones controlling the way of mind and will of everybody for their own gain and control to retain that gain.

That is dialectical materialism if you fear the word Communist....or Socialist.

Then we will cloak it in religious piousness false light for the same ends.....falsehoods godless inside by conforming all that is of god or god to an outward wearing and portrait that evidences their god for you.

The image that speaks vanity....lies and thief godless as hell its self and all there in.

For it is all bout their gain of tangible temporal matter substance and the way to keep all this captive unto their own control.
