if the sun is darkened, and the "moonlight" is a reflection of the sun's light off of the face of the moon, how the hell would you expect the moon to still light up when the sun isn't shining?

The earth couldn't survive without the moon. Well, it would but not much else will.

The moon stabilizes the earth rotation, we would wobble pretty badly without it. The hot waters around the equator would move to the poles and melt them.

The moon also influences the ocean tides and currents. Without it most of the shoreline salt water wildlife would die. Then things that feed on that would die, and so on.

A lot of nocturnal animals rely on some moonlight to see and without the moon the balance would be lost and even more species will die.

You may be surprised to find out, as I was, that the Earth does not really need the moon. That it was “perfectly placed to sustain life” turns out to be a load of nonsense.

I would like to point out that Venus has no moon, and no problem with axial instability. Venus is almost as large as earth. Mars has two tiny moons, and again, no axial instability. It is likely that the lunar influence on life is miniscule. Life has indeed adapted to the presence of a moon and tides. But life would simply have taken a different course had there been no moon. The night sky would be as dark as any new moon night. Nocturnal birds and other animals would have more difficulty seeing by only starlight. I'm not certain, but I suspect owls hunt better in partial moonlight than they do during the new moon.

No tides, but that is nearly irrelevant in terms of lakes and streams. There would still be ocean waves, earthquake driven tsunami, and the like. The moon could drift away entirely and the earth would not miss it all that much. A century ago everyone knew the lunar phases, because they depended on them for light. Today, in the industrial world, few people have any idea how long the lunar month is, or when the next full moon will occur.

You'd still get tides from the Sun. They'd be smaller and happen at the same time every day but they'd still be there.

The $496 million Grail mission — short for Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory — launched in September 2011 to map the moon's gravity field in unprecedented detail. Ebb and Flow arrived in orbit around the moon about one year ago — on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, respectively.


The washing-machine-size spacecraft were originally tasked with 90-day science missions, which ran from March to May. But NASA extended Grail, allowing the two probes to gather a trove of additional data.

Ebb and Flow have been flying in formation around the moon, detecting the tiny changes in the distance between them caused by lunar mountains, craters and subsurface mass concentrations. Scientists used these ultra-precise measurements to construct an incredibly accurate map of the lunar gravity field.

i highly doubt that was a projected moon in the video because it would be losing shape e.g when closer clouds passed by the projection would look slightly smaller, and say there was no clouds passing by the image would be projected directly into space and either appear massive against dimmer clouds or not show at all?
